Mark Doty is a poet and memoirist from the United States. Under the combined pseudonym M. R. Doty, he authorizes several volumes of poetry, essays, and memoirs. In addition, he is a co-author of the chapbooks that are published. Mark Doty is the son of Lawrence Woodworth and Ruth S. Doty, and he was born on August 10, 1953, in Maryville, Tennessee, in the United States of America.
Doty attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts. He then attended Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, where he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing. After finishing his degree at Drake University in Iowa, he came to New York City.
He worked as a temporary office worker there while establishing himself in the city. Nevertheless, Doty was releasing some of his earlier work around this time. Turtle, Swan, the author’s first poetry collection, was first turned down for publication by David Godine, the publisher. However, Godine eventually gave in to Roger Weingarten, an author whose previous works had been published by Godine, and accepted the collection. The year 1991 saw the release of Bethlehem in Broad Daylight, the second collection of Doty’s work.
His piece, titled My Alexandria, was published in 1993. In this piece, Doty speaks on the suffering that comes with living life through the lens of AIDS. Following the passing of Doty’s business partner Wally Roberts, Doty discovered that he could not read or write for an extended time.
The creation of Atlantis was a reaction to and a depiction of Wally’s sickness and death in many different ways. However, a friend organizing an anthology asked him for a poem, which inspired him to write not a poem but a book-length memoir titled Heaven’s Coast. In this memoir, he dealt with Wally’s life and death via the medium of prose and came to terms with both of these events.
The poetry book Sweet Machine was published the year after Heaven’s Coast in 1998. Doty’s second book, “Firebird,” was released in 1999. In this memoir, Doty describes his experiences as a young child growing up, including those of an often tough home life and an emerging knowledge of his homosexuality. Firebird was Doty’s second memoir.
Doty analyzes a Dutch still-life painting by Jan Davidsz de Heem that was created in Antwerp 350 years ago. The artwork is titled “Still Life with Oysters and Lemon.” The Art of Description, published in 2010, is another one of his articles. It is a compilation of four pieces: “Doty considers the task of saying what you see and the challenges of rendering experience through language.”
His book of poems titled Source was published in the year 2001. The lyrics were written for years, during which time he spent as a visiting writer in the stTexas and Massachusetts. Doty didn’t publish her first book of poetry until 2005’s In School of the Arts, which came out four years later. Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems, published in 2008, is another collection of his poems.
Doty describes in Dog Years: A Memoir his complicated and love connection with the pair of dogs, Arden and Beau, who helped nurture and nourish him as he faced Wally’s sickness and death. Arden and Beau were there for him as he battled Wally’s illness and death.
Doty has formerly taught at the University of Iowa, Princeton University, Columbia University, Cornell University, and New York University. It has been ten years since he served as the John and Rebecca Moores Professor in the Creative Writing Program graduate program at The University of Houston. He is the Distinguished Professor and Writer-in-Residence in the Department of English at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he also serves as the director of Writers House.
In addition, he has been a part of The Juniper Summer Writing Institute, a component of the MFA Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
