Bio

Manchester was one of the fastest expanding cities throughout the Industrial Revolution, thanks in large part to the influx of workers from all over the British Isles. From a relatively tiny town at the turn of the nineteenth century, Manchester had grown to almost one million inhabitants by 1900, making it one of Europe’s largest cities. It was ideal conditions for football teams to form; after all, the sport was heavily dominated by workers in its early history. The club that would eventually become Manchester United FC was formed in 1878 under the name Newton Heath L&YR Football Club. L&YR refers to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, where the team’s player worked.

In 1892, the team made their debut in the Football League (they should not be confused with Manchester Football Club, founded in 1860 and participated in the FA Cup in the 1870s before shifting to Rugby). They were, however, relegated after two seasons. Following that, in 1902, a new group of local businessmen assumed control of the club and renamed it Manchester United. Under the leadership of Ernest Mangnall, the newly titled team won the English League title in 1908. The next year, the FA Cup was won for the first time. In 1910, the team relocated to its current stadium, Old Trafford.

Following World War II, the club enjoyed a prosperous period following the appointment of Matt Busby in 1945. This innovative leader dramatically restructured the club and instilled a new sense of trust in the club’s youth, and his method proved to be astoundingly successful.

In 1955–56 and 1956–57, the United team won the league. At the time, the average age was 21, making them the youngest team to win the Football League and earning them the nickname “Busby Babes.” In the history of Manchester United, one day in 1958 stands out in gloomy colours.

After a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade, the United team was on its way back to England when calamity occurred. After refuelling in Munich, the plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing eight players and three crew members. However, the coach survived the plane crash and went on to build another fantastic team that won numerous championship trophies and witnessed heartbreaking triumphs throughout the years.

Following that, the team was led by Tommy Docherty, who provided an even more suitable environment for success. Docherty was, however, replaced in 1977 by Dave Sexton, who was more circumspect. He was succeeded by Ron Atkinson in 1981.

Alex Ferguson was appointed manager of the club in 1986. Though it may be difficult to imagine, Ferguson’s early years as a coach were exceedingly challenging until the squad won the FA Cup in 1990. The team won at least 25 major trophies during the next two decades, including approximately eleven League crowns.

Manchester United first won the Double in 1994. Following that, it became the first English team to achieve the Treble by simultaneously winning the FA Cup, the Premier League, and the UEFA Champions League in 1998-1999. The team maintained its meteoric rise by defeating Palmeiras to win the club world championship.
