In her lengthy career spanning more than six decades, Smith has made cameos in more than fifty movies. She is a well-known figure in British culture who received the honorary title of Dame from Queen Elizabeth II for her work in the performing arts. She was also awarded the Companion of Honor by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014 for her contributions to play. Before transitioning to film, she started her career as a stage performer as a teenager.

Her rise to fame began with her appearance in the movie “Nowhere to Go.” Later, she received an Oscar for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in the category of “Best Actress” and another for “Best Supporting Actress” for her work in “California Suite.” Only six actresses, including Smith, have won the Oscar in both categories. In addition, she has garnered four Emmys, five BAFTAs, three Golden Globes, and one Tony. She also received a lot of attention and acclaim for her more recent work in the Harry Potter movie series. On December 28, 1934, Margaret Natalie “Maggie” Smith was born in Ilford, Essex. Her mother’s name was Margaret Hutton, and her father was a pathologist who specialized in public health.

When she was four years old, her family relocated to Oxford because her father had been hired as a pathologist at Oxford University. Her two older brothers were also twins. In 1958, Maggie Smith appeared in the British crime movie “Nowhere to Go” in her first significant appearance on the big screen. In the movie, a criminal searches for his hidden goods after breaking out of jail while being pursued by the police and scorned by his associates. Smith received the “Most Promising Newcomer” BAFTA Award.

She portrayed the title character in the 1969 drama film “The Prime of Jean Brodie,” which was adapted from the same-named book. Even though the movie didn’t do well financially, critics gave it high marks. Her role as witchcraft instructor Minerva McGonagall in the fantasy movie “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which was based on JK Rowling’s book of the same name, saw her reputation soar to new heights in 2001. The picture, which Chris Columbus directed, grossed more than $1 billion. Reviews were largely favorable as well. She additionally had a supporting part in the critically acclaimed British mystery movie “Gosford Park” from 2001. It was also prosperous financially.

She reprised her role as Minerva McGonagall in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” the second installment of the Harry Potter film series, after making an appearance in the 2002 movie “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.” Both critically and financially, it was successful.

She earned her first Emmy in 2003 for her performance in the television film “My House in Umbria.” The 2004 release of her following movie, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” was similarly a critical and financial success.

She made an appearance in the fourth Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” which was released in 2005. Financially and critically, it was successful. In three other movies from the series, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part II,” she returned to the character of McGonagall.

She had a significant role in the television show “Downton Abbey” from 2010 to 2015, which earned her multiple Emmy Awards. A voice role in the animated comedy movie “Sherlock Gnomes” is her most recent accomplishment.

She then had subsequent appearances in movies like “Travels with My Aunt”  and “Death on the Nile” (1978). Smith received her third Oscar nomination for the first. She received her second Academy Award in the “Best Supporting Actress” category for her performance in Herbert Ross’ 1979 comedy “California Suite.” She also took home the ‘Best Actress-Comedy or Musical Golden Globe Award.

For her portrayal in the play “Private Lives,” Maggie Smith received her first Tony Award nomination in 1975 for “Best Actress,” and she received a second nod for “Night and Day” in the same category. Her next notable project was the fantasy film “Clash of the Titans” from 1981, in which she played a key role. With a $9 million budget, the movie made $41 million in box office revenue.

She appeared in the commercially successful comedy movie “A Private Function” in 1984. Smith received her second BAFTA for it. For her performances in “A Room with a View” and “The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearn,” she received two further BAFTA Awards during the same decade. Her performance in the play “Lettice and Lovage” earned her the first and only Tony Award she has received to date in 1990.

She attended Oxford High School up until the age of sixteen, and then the Oxford Playhouse School from 1951 to 1953. She made her stage debut in a 1952 production of “Twelfth Night” by William Shakespeare. In the 1956 film “Child in the House,” she made her acting debut in an uncredited role.
