In a deeper sense, Trump was a product of his era when, according to Haberman, in a notorious meeting with the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon, “Trump realized that he was being told something he did not completely understand and instead of accepting that, he yelled down the teachers.” He transitioned from business mogul to celebrity to “brand” over the course of the last 40 years, much like American free capitalism progressed from the production of steel to casino games on Wall Street to celebrity “influencers” on reality TV. Although he wasn’t a very successful businessman, he played one on “The Apprentice,” where most Americans first encountered him.
There is a sickening truth to a man from Iowa’s justification for voting for Trump: “I watched him handle his business.” When he began selling his name to outsiders who wanted to have it displayed on buildings, Trump discovered his true calling. He sold phonies like Trump University and items like Trump wine and steaks to unsuspecting people looking to profit by affiliation. According to Haberman, “His personal brand mattered more than what was on his balance sheet.” It certainly was preferable to working.
