Bio

English lexicographer, etymologist, and media figure Susie Dent were born in 1964. Since 1992, she has made appearances on “Dictionary Corner” of the Channel 4 game show Countdown. She also makes an appearance on Jimmy Carr’s post-watershed comic version of 8 Out of 10 Cats called Countdown. Since 2016, she has served as the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading’s honorary vice-president. Dent was born in Woking, Surrey. She attended the Marist Convent in Ascot, an independent Roman Catholic day school, and spent a semester at Eton College preparing for the Oxbridge entrance exams. She then transferred to Somerville College in Oxford to complete her BA in modern languages before completing her master’s degree in German at Princeton University.

When Dent started working on Countdown in 1992, she had just started working for the Oxford University Press on generating English dictionaries, having previously worked on bilingual dictionaries.  Dent’s first employment was as a waitress. Dent wrote a series of annual Language Reports for the Oxford University Press from 2003 to 2007.

This book’s format was changed in 2008 to an A-Z compendium of newly invented and recently revived words. It was released as Words of the Year in October 2008. Susie Dent, a steadfast member of Countdown, claims that while she has a great bond with co-star Rachel Riley, she is not actively looking for love. Dent, 57, has been in charge of Dictionary Corner for the past 30 years. Earlier this year, he honored the iconic TV program’s 4,000+ episodes and 40 years on the air.

In 2005, the publisher released Winning Words and What Made the Crocodile Cry? 101 queries about the English language. How to Talk Like a Local, a book penned by Dent and available under ISBN 1905211791, was published in March 2010. Dent is widely acknowledged for her work as the in-house lexicographer and adjudicator for the letters rounds on the television show Countdown, broadcasted on Channel 4. In each episode, she briefly explains the history of a specific term or phrase. Dent has been an integral part of the show’s cast since its inception in 1992, and she has made over 4,500 appearances. She also contributes to the spin-off series, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

However, after divorcing her husband of 20 years, Paul Atkins, last year, the lexicographer claims that dating is “absolutely not on my radar.” Recently, friends attempted to set her up with an Eton College housemaster from a prestigious institution, but she declined, saying, “I’m not seeking anyone at all.” Dent said, “I wouldn’t, for a second, think of putting myself on a dating app. I never intended that to be my professional path, but I feel immensely grateful it was because it’s the best employment in the world.” She also has no plans to venture into online dating by signing up for an app like Tinder.

Susie reflected on her debut on Countdown in 1992 when she joined Rula Lenska, Richard Whiteley, and Carol Vorderman in Dictionary Corner at the age of 27, saying, “I suppose I seemed cocky when actually I was terrified. I tried to conceal myself behind Rula’s hair for most of the show.” After collaborating for 13 years, Dent said she and Riley had developed a “silent understanding you get between people who have been friends for a long time,” particularly in regards to Dent’s unintended hand gestures and innuendos on set.

“She immediately understands it and thinks it amusing that I don’t.” It’s just amazing how much empathy and joy we share. “I assumed it was my first and final time because I was concerned about the exposure and had previously declined several times.” Right now, I’m still there, taping five shows per day over blocks of three days. Since it’s easy to forget how the participants are feeling, I frequently replay that moment to remind myself how significant the “betterment,” whether it be exhilaration, fear, or overwhelming excitement for them, is.

“When the timer starts to run out, I still experience that sense of rush to come up with a wise response. However, she adds, “I quite appreciate that the pressure is off… I don’t really feel like I need someone.” The Oxford graduate acknowledges that as she ages, she occasionally feels “invisible” to the other sex. Along with participating in the perennial Channel 4 quiz, she is now concentrating on her children, Lucy, 22, and Thea, 14. In a segment of the BBC series Not Going Out, Dent made an appearance as herself.

Susie Dent’s Guide to Swearing, a web series on Channel 4 that examined the etymology and background of a few English expletives, was presented by Dent. She also appeared on the BBC comedy program Would I Lie to You? In addition, she made five appearances on Richard Osman’s panel show House of Games in 2018. In 2019, Dent and Gyles Brandreth co-hosted the podcast Something Rhymes With Purple.
