Lola Falana Bio

Lola Falana is an American singer, dancer, and actress. She was born Loletha Elayne Falana or Loletha Elaine Falana on September 11, 1942; however, she is best known by her stage name, Lola Falana. Lola Falana was born in Camden, which is located in the state of New Jersey. She was the third child to be born to Bennett, a welder, and Cleo Falana, a seamstress. She was the third of six children to be born to Bennett and Cleo. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, the Afro-Cuban man who was Falana’s father went on to become a welder soon after meeting the African-American woman who would become Falana’s mother. Falana’s mother was born in Cuba. By the time Falana was 3 years old, she was already dancing, and by the time she was 5 years old, she was singing in the church choir. The Falana family relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the year 1952.

By this time, Falana had already gained two more siblings. While Falana was still in the middle of her junior high school years, her mother would take her out to various nightclubs so that she could dance there. Because she placed such a high priority on establishing a career in music, she defied the desires of her parents and went to New York City only a few months short of graduating from Germantown High School in order to pursue her musical ambitions. During a nightclub engagement by Dinah Washington in Philadelphia in 1958, when Falana was just 16 years old, Washington offered her the opportunity to perform as the opening act. This was Falana’s first professional dance job. Falana’s early career was helped along in a significant way by Washington, who is known as the Queen of Blues.

Falana was found by Sammy Davis Jr. when she was dancing in a chorus line in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  Sammy Davis Jr. awarded Falana a prominent part in his 1964 Broadway musical Golden Boy after seeing her perform. After the success of the musical, Falana began her career as a musician later that year in 1964. Mercury Records was responsible for the recording and distribution of her first song, “My Baby,” which came out in 1965. In her later years as a recording artist, she did some work for Frank Sinatra’s record company. During the latter half of the 1960s, Sammy Davis Jr. served as a guide and advisor to Falana.

Davis gave Falana her first film job in A Man Called Adam, which he directed and starred in alongside himself, Ossie Davis, and Cicely Tyson, in 1966. In 1966, Falana rose to prominence as a great personality on Italian television, and in 1967, she made her film debut. She acted in three movies while she was in Italy, the first of which was a spaghetti western. As a result, she became proficient in the Italian language at this time. She performed as a showgirl on the major TV show that aired on Saturday nights, Sabato Sera, next to the renowned singer Mina. She was dubbed the “Black Venus” by her fans. During this period, she was very busy performing as a singer and dancer on tour with Davis, filming films in Italy, and playing the part of Golden Boy during the production’s revival in London.

In 1969, Falana’s tight professional connection with Sammy Davis Jr. came to an end; despite this, the two continued to be good friends. According to what she said in an interview with TV Guide, “If I hadn’t broken away, I would always be recognized as the little dancer with Sammy Davis Jr…I aspired to be recognized for more than just what I was. Her first role in an American film was The Liberation of L.B. Jones, which she played in 1970. As a result of her performance, she was considered for the Golden Globe Award in the category of New Star of the Year – Actress. During the same year, she was featured in Playboy magazine with a photo shoot.

She was the first lady of African descent to pose for the Fabergé “Tigress” perfume advertisements. During those early years of her career, she had roles in a few movies that may be classified as belonging to the blaxploitation genre. In 1978, she made an appearance at the Black Pride, Inc.-sponsored event held at the Val Air Ballroom. In the early 1970s, Falana became recognizable to viewers watching television in the United States. She was a regular guest on shows including “The Joey Bishop Show” and “The Hollywood Palace,” where she showcased her talents in singing, dancing, and comedic impressions. These performances resulted in the creation of more possibilities.

She was the first supporting player that Bill Cosby recruited for his much-anticipated The New Bill Cosby Show, which made its premiere on September 11, 1972. The show was a huge success and went on to win several awards. When Bill Cosby was a failing comedian in college, he met Falana, who at the time was a 14-year-old dancing for $10 each performance in Philadelphia nightclubs. Falana was Cosby’s first girlfriend. Throughout the middle of the 1970s, Falana was a frequent guest on a wide variety of well-known television programs, such as The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Muppet Show, Laugh-In, and The Flip Wilson Show. Additionally, she was the star of her own television programs. There’s A Man Out There Somewhere, a disco single released by Falana in 1975, peaked at number 67 on the R&B list of the Billboard album sales chart. The following year, she made her way back to Broadway to star in the leading role in the musical Doctor Jazz. Despite the fact that the show was only performed a total of five times, Falana was recognized with a nomination for a Tony Award and received the 1975 Theater World Award.

She moved her act to Las Vegas with the assistance of Sammy Davis, Jr., and quickly became one of the most popular draws in that city. Falana was revered as the “Queen of Las Vegas” by the time the 1970s came to a close. At The Sands, The Riviera, and The MGM Grand hotels, she performed in front of audiences that were completely full. At long last, The Aladdin gave her a performance contract paying her $100,000 per week. During that time period, Falana was the female performer in Las Vegas who earned the most money.

Her performance lasted for a total of twenty weeks every year, and it quickly became a popular destination for vacationers. While Falana was performing to sold-out audiences in Las Vegas, she was looking to other big parts on television. Initially, she was scheduled to feature in a version of the 1950s show Vampira. when there was a failure in this project. She played the role of Charity Blake, a rich entertainment entrepreneur, in the CBS soap opera Capitol, which was canceled after a brief run.
