Miranda was born in New York City on January 16, 1980, to Puerto Rican parents. Luz Towns-Miranda, his clinical psychologist mother, and his political consultant father, Luis A. Miranda, Jr., settled in Manhattan’s Inwood neighbourhood.
Miranda and his sister grew up in a musical family; both siblings took piano lessons and were encouraged by parents who adored Broadway music (Luis particularly adores the show The Unsinkable Molly Brown). While the Mirandas were unable to attend live performances on a regular basis, they were able to listen to cast recordings.
Miranda, who was exposed to a variety of musical genres as a child, developed a love of hip-hop, particularly the music of the Beastie Boys, Boogie Down Productions, and Eric B. & Rakim. Miranda appeared in student stage productions during his pre-teen and adolescent years while attending Hunter College’s elementary and high schools. He went on to study theatre at Wesleyan University.
He worked as a high school English teacher for a time after graduation. Miranda began working on the musical that would become In the Heights while still at Wesleyan. In the Heights was set in Washington Heights and featured Latin sounds interwoven with more traditional show tune fare, with Miranda starring in the production and writing the show’s music and lyrics. The musical premiered in 2008 and was a smash hit, running for nearly two years and winning four Tony Awards, including best musical.
Miranda remained a Broadway powerhouse, translating for a 2009 revival of West Side Story and contributing music and lyrics to 2012’s Bring It On: The Musical. He also appeared on television shows such as The Sopranos, How I Met Your Mother, and Modern Family, as well as in films such as The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012) and 200 Cartas (2013). Miranda and Tom Kitt won an Emmy in 2014 for their song “Bigger” from the 67th Annual Tony Awards telecast, in a perfect marriage of career interests.
Miranda picked up Ron Chernow’s 2004 book Alexander Hamilton, an acclaimed biography of America’s first secretary of the Treasury, while on vacation in 2008. Miranda was inspired to create a full-length work chronicling Hamilton’s life after developing an interest in the historical figure.
picHe first performed a song from the future show at the White House’s inaugural Evening of Poetry & Spoken Word in 2009. The musical was also featured in the 2012 American Songbook Series at Lincoln Center Theater and the 2013 Powerhouse Theatre Season at Vassar College by New York Stage and Film. Hamilton eventually made its debut at the Public Theater in early 2015, and a few months later, it made its Broadway debut, racking up massive advance ticket sales. In the same year, he received a MacArthur Foundation Award.
The show, which stars Miranda as Hamilton, chronicles some of the most notable historical events associated with him, from his high-profile sex scandal to his life-ending duel with Aaron Burr. Hamilton has received widespread acclaim for its distinct sensibilities, relying on a Black and Latino cast with hip-hop/R&B sounds in a stage musical format to tell the storey of this United States’ Founding Father. The Broadway musical has become a must-see event not only for theatregoers, but also for a number of celebrities, including President Barack Obama and musical legend Stephen Sondheim.
