Bio

James is the only child of Gloria James, who gave birth to him when she was sixteen years old in Akron, Ohio, in 1984. Throughout James’s childhood, Gloria struggled to provide for him. James and his mother moved seven times in a year when he was about five years old. During elementary school, James lived with a foster family for a few years. Eddie Jackson, Gloria’s longtime boyfriend, has acted as a father figure for James, but he was not always present during James’s childhood, spending several years in prison for selling drugs and, later, fraud. Regardless of their difficulties, James and his mother have a close and supportive relationship. He told Sports Illustrated’s Jack McCallum: “My mother is everything to me. It has always been that way. There will always be.”

“I don’t want to be a cocky rookie who comes in and tries to take the lead right away…. If there’s one message I want to send to my teammates, it’s that I’ll be there for them and do whatever they need me to do.”

James, who is taller and more athletic than most other kids his age, became obsessed with basketball as a child. Dru Joyce II, who coached James for many years, recalled in an article for the Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service that when James was in elementary school, he was an aggressive offensive player who “really liked to shoot the ball—a lot.” Joyce recalled some advice he gave to James at the time: “I began telling LeBron about passing the ball and how great players help their teammates improve. I discussed getting his shots in the flow of the game.” Joyce assumed he would have to remind the eleven-year-old to be a team player several times, but he was mistaken. James took in everything his coach said and immediately altered his playing style. “That was the last time I had to say anything about LeBron shooting too much,” Joyce recalled.

Anthony, the third overall pick with only one year of college basketball under his belt, would have gotten even more attention if he hadn’t been drafted at the same time as James. His one year of college basketball for Syracuse University resulted in a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship, with Anthony named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA championship series.

Anthony was drafted by the Denver Nuggets, who, like the Cleveland Cavaliers, are near the bottom of the NBA standings. Expectations for Anthony, like those for James, were extremely high: the Nuggets would be relying on him to pull them out of obscurity and into playoff contention. Anthony had a strong rookie season, averaging 21 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. The Nuggets went from winning seventeen games in 2002–03 to forty-three games in Anthony’s first season, which was perhaps the most significant statistic for his team.

Anthony grew up in Baltimore, Maryland’s rough inner city. Carmelo’s father died when he was two years old, leaving his mother, Mary Anthony, to raise him and his three older siblings on her own. She pushed her son to stay focused and disciplined in basketball, and she pushed him to go to college before going pro. Anthony had to leave his Baltimore high school to attend the prestigious Oak Hill Academy, a Baptist boarding school in Virginia, in order to fulfil his desire to play for Syracuse.

He worked hard in school to improve his grades so that he could be admitted to Syracuse, and he practised basketball as much as he could. He helped the Oak Hill team to a third-place national ranking in 2002, and he earned the grades required to attend Syracuse.Anthony has been described as an unusually mature player who has maintained his down-to-earth demeanour in the face of money, celebrity, and pressure.

At the time, James’ best friends included Dru Joyce III, the son of his summer-league coach, and Sian Cotton, the son of another summer-league coach, Lee Cotton. Those coaches, who both emphasised the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork, assisted James in developing the foundation of his playing style. As kids, James and his friends Joyce III and Cotton, as well as Willie McGee, played together whenever they could, and they vowed to stick together all the way through high school.

The four boys all attended Akron’s St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, a private school known for its basketball programme, and that childhood promise became a reality. James not only became the school’s star basketball player at St. Vincent–St. Mary, but he also played football for three years while maintaining good grades. Because of James’s team-first mentality, he spent as much of his playing time passing the ball to teammates and setting up shots as he did taking shots himself, resulting in his exceptional passing abilities.

His high school coaches believed James had the potential to be a player who averaged fifty to sixty points per game. Instead, he averaged closer to thirty points per game, but he helped his entire team improve. Many coaches and sportswriters have praised James’ maturity and selflessness as a player; Keith Dambrot, who coached James for his first two years of high school, summarised the key to James’ success in the Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service article: “LeBron is a basketball genius, there is no other way to put it.”
