Conservative talk radio personality and right-wing political pundit Laurence Allen Elder was born in the United States on April 27, 1952. Elder hosts the California-based Larry Elder Show. The programme debuted in 1993 as a local programme on Los Angeles radio station KABC and remained there until 2008, then returned from 2010 to 2014. Initially via ABC Radio Networks from 2002 to 2007, and subsequently through Salem Media Group from 2015 until 2022, the programme is nationally syndicated. He still has connections to the Falun Gong movement’s far-right journal, The Epoch Times. Middle child of three brothers, Laurence Allen Elder was born in Los Angeles and raised there in the Pico-Union and South Central neighbourhoods.
Randolph, his father, who was born in Athens, Georgia, served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II before making the Second Great Migration from Georgia to California. Around 1962, Randolph Elder founded a coffeehouse in Pico-Union after working as a janitor at Nabisco. Larry Elder remembered his father’s passing in 2011 when he said: “My dad was a tough, forthright man who often scared my two brothers and myself. But we never questioned his devotion to or affection for his family.” On their father’s behalf, Elder and Kirk got a Congressional Gold Medal from U.S. Representative Dana Rohrabacher in 2013. Viola, Larry Elder’s mother, was born in Toney, Alabama. She worked as a clerical assistant for the American Department of War during World War II.
His mother was a Democrat, while his father was a Republican. In 1988, Elder started co-hosting Fabric, a topical television programme created by Dennis Goulden and shown on Cleveland’s PBS affiliate WVIZ. From 1994 through December 2008, Elder held a daily evening discussion programme on the Los Angeles talk radio station KABC. Then, in December 2009, he started a webcast and a daily live podcast. KABC welcomed Elder back in September 2010. Elder declared his candidature in July 2021 to succeed Gavin Newsom as governor of California in the subsequent recall election. He said that Dennis Prager, a mentor to Elder and a fellow conservative talk-radio personality, pushed him to run.
Elder’s name was initially omitted from the list of candidates to appear on the ballot in California by Secretary of State Shirley Weber because, according to Senate Bill 27, which was passed in 2019, he had not submitted all the necessary tax return information. The law required tax return disclosure for both presidential and gubernatorial candidates in order to appear on a “primary” ballot. Elder filed a lawsuit, claiming that his paperwork was completed correctly and that Weber was responsible for correcting the claimed mistakes.
Elder’s reinstatement to the recall ballot was ordered by Judge Laurie Earl of the Sacramento County Superior Court on July 21, 2021. She reasoned that Weber had wrongfully disqualified Elder, who had “substantially complied” with the disclosure requirements, and that the tax return disclosure requirements for the recall election imposed by Secretary of State Weber were invalid because the special recall election was not a “direct primary election.”
Elder had assumed the lead on the election’s replacement question upon his entrance. He declined to debate other Republican recall candidates, including former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer, state assemblyman Kevin Kiley, and businessman John Cox, and had declined to share the platform with several of them at Republican Party gatherings. Pete Wilson, a former governor of California, served as one of Elder’s campaign advisers. Elder promised to appoint a Republican to the seat of Dianne Feinstein, one of California’s two Democratic senators, if she were elected governor.
Elder said, without providing any supporting data, that there will be “shenanigans” during the recall election in September 2021. Unfoundedly claiming that analysis “detected fraud in California culminating in Governor Gavin Newsom being reinstalled as governor,” a website funded by Elder’s campaign claimed the election had “twisted outcomes” four days before to election day and before the results were announced. Elder advised his followers to be “gracious in defeat” the night of the election after Newsom defeated the recall campaign and said, “we may have lost the battle, but we are going to win the war.” Elder then continued to attack Newsom harshly.Elder was let go by KABC in December 2014 after his afternoon programme.
In 2015, he received recognition with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Elder joins the CRN Digital Talk Radio Networks roster in June 2015. The Larry Elder Show started receiving nationwide syndication in August 2015 through the Salem Radio Network, which includes Los Angeles station KRLA.
In a 2020 NPR interview with Jean Guerrero, she said that Elder had informed her that Miller had been a guest on his radio show 69 times in all. Miller had first phoned in to the programme as a high school student, and Elder had been pleased. Miller, who lists Elder as an inspiration, eventually joined the Trump administration and was the mind behind the president’s immigration regulations.
After six years, Elder unexpectedly ended his afternoon shift on Salem Radio on April 4, 2022. Carl Jackson, his usual stand-in host, who had taken Elder’s place while the latter was running for governor of California, has once again been designated as the temporary stand-in host until a permanent successor is chosen. Together with fellow conservatives Fred Barnes and Laura Ingraham, he presented the PBS show National Desk in 1997. Redefining Racism: Fresh Voices From Black America was moderated by Elder. Title IX was attacked in the book Title IX and Women in Sports: What’s Wrong With This Picture.
Elder received a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award in 2000 for his Making Waves – LAUSD KCAL-TV News programme. In 2000 and 2001, Elder served as the Warner Brothers Television courtroom drama Moral Court presenter. He served as the host of the Warner Bros.-distributed syndicated discussion programme The Larry Elder Show in 2004. He produced a self-financed movie in 2005 called Michael & Me, in which he challenges Bowling for Columbine director Michael Moore’s viewpoint.Elder participated in the 2007 round of auditions for the MSNBC talk show Imus in the Morning, which has since been cancelled.
Joe Scarborough, however, was given the position instead.Creators Syndicate columnist Elder writes for them. Investor’s Business Daily, World Net Daily, Townhall.com, Jewish World Review, and FrontPage Magazine all publish his print and online column. He is the presenter of a video programme produced by The Epoch Times.
Elder, a Fairfax High School honours student who also took advanced classes, graduated from Crenshaw High School in 1970 and obtained his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Brown University in 1974. Later, in 1977, he received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School.
Former lawyer Elder has authored nonfiction books and a well read column for Creators Syndicate. He entered politics for the first time in 2021, running as a Republican in the recall vote for Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom of California. Elder finished top among the replacement candidates, and the recall was soundly rejected.
