Bio

Ronda Jean Rousey is a renowned American professional wrestler, actress, former judoka, and mixed martial artist who has achieved significant success in various fields. She is currently under contract with WWE and is competing on the SmackDown brand. Rousey has held the title of women’s champion twice and is widely known for her involvement in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Rousey was given the nickname “Rowdy” by professional wrestler Roddy Piper. She was born in Riverside, California, on February 1st, 1987, as the youngest of three children to AnnMaria De Mars (née Waddell) and Ronald John Rousey, after whom she was named. Her mother was a renowned judoka who became the first American to win a World Judo Championship. Rousey’s maternal grandparents were of English, Polish, Trinidadian, and Venezuelan origin.

One of Rousey’s maternal great-grandfathers, Alfred E. Waddell, was a Trinidadian physician who immigrated to Canada and became one of the first Black doctors in North America. Her maternal great-grandmother was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Rousey’s stepfather is an aeronautical engineer. Unfortunately, when Rousey was eight years old, her biological father broke his back while sledding with his children and committed himself.

AnnMaria worked towards her PhD in educational psychology at the University of California, Riverside as Rousey and her sisters grew up. Rousey began practicing judo with her mother at the age of 11, and they continued to train together until Rousey inadvertently injured her wrist at the age of 13. At the age of 17, Rousey qualified as the youngest judoka for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. However, she was defeated in her first contest at 63 kg by silver medallist Claudia Heill. Rousey also won the World Junior Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary in 2004.

In April 2006, Rousey won the Birmingham World Cup in Great Britain, becoming the first female American judoka to do so in over ten years. Later that year, at the Junior World Championships, the 19-year-old made history by becoming the first American athlete to win two Junior World medals when she won the bronze medal. Rousey became one of the top three female competitors in the world when she increased her weight to 70 kg in February 2007. She won the middleweight division’s silver medal at the 2007 World Judo Championships and the gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games.

Rousey participated in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, in August of that year. She fell short in the quarterfinals against former world champion Edith Bosch of the Netherlands, however the repechage bracket allowed her to advance to the bronze medal match. By using Yuko, Rousey overcame Annett Boehm to earn the bronze medal. Since women’s judo was added to the Olympic programme in 1992, Rousey’s victory became her the first American to take home an Olympic medal in the category.

At age 21, Rousey gave up judo after the Olympics. After earning her Olympic gold, Rousey lived with a roommate in a studio apartment in Venice Beach, California, and supported herself and her dog by working three jobs as a cocktail server and bartender. Due to apraxia, a neurological developmental speech sound condition, Rousey battled with speaking for the first six years of her life and could not construct an understandable phrase.

Her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck at birth is thought to cause her speech impairment. Rousey’s parents relocated to Jamestown, North Dakota, from Riverside, California, when she was three years old so she to get extensive speech treatment from doctors at Minot State University. Rousey left high school early but eventually obtained her GED. She was raised between Jamestown and Southern California. After resigning from judo at age 21, she began an MMA career at 22 after realizing she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life in traditional employment.

Having won bronze in judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Rousey became the first American woman to accomplish so. In 2011, she started her mixed martial arts career with King of the Cage. As soon as UFC acquired Strikeforce, she entered and quickly rose to the position of last women’s bantamweight champion there.

Rousey participated in the UFC’s first-ever female fight at event UFC 157, won the division’s first Women’s Bantamweight Championship, and held the record for the most female fighters to successfully defend their titles, with six until Valentina Shevchenko did so in 2022.  In 2018, Rousey became the first female fighter to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame after quitting mixed martial arts in 2016.

Rousey started her professional wrestling career in 2018 after joining WWE and made her debut at WrestleMania 34. She won the Raw Women’s Championship at SummerSlam of that year, and when she successfully defended it at WWE Evolution, she was the star of WWE’s first-ever all-pay-per-view. Women’s At WrestleMania 35, Rousey lost the championship match in the first-ever women’s WrestleMania main event.

At Royal Rumble 2022, Rousey made a comeback and won in the women’s Royal Rumble contest. Later, she unsuccessfully contested Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 38. Rousey won the SmackDown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania Backlash the following month by defeating Flair in an “I Quit” match.

She then lost the championship to Liv Morgan as a result of a money-in-the-bank cash-in, but she won it back at Extreme Rules, becoming the second woman to hold the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Only Rousey has headlined a pay-per-view event for both the UFC and WWE, and she is the only female champion in both organisations.
