Kwame Alexander, whose full name is Edward Curtis Kwame Alexander II, is an American poet, author of young adult and children’s literature, and an advocate for teaching children the craft of writing and the value of reading literary works. He was born on August 21, 1968, in New York City, New York. After receiving the Newbery Medal in 2015 for his book The Crossover (2014), which he had written in large part in free verse, he rose to popularity on a national level.
Alexander’s mother was an English instructor, while his father worked as a writer and publisher. Alexander was born into this family. His family uprooted and relocated to Virginia when he was 12 years old. Alexander changed his major from biochemistry to English at Virginia Tech, where Nikki Giovanni, a poet and professor, taught him. Under Giovanni’s instruction, Alexander acquired an interest in poetry.
His first job was as an editor, and was responsible for the publication The Flow: New Black Poets in Motion (1994). In addition to his numerous creative endeavors, he founded the Alexander Publishing Group and BlackWords Press, an imprint of the Alexander Publishing Group (1995–2005). In 2019, Alexander collaborated with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publishing house to develop the Versify label. He selected children’s books for publication under this name as part of this endeavor.
In 1995, Alexander’s first book of poetry geared for adults, titled Just Us: Poems and Counterpoems, 1986–1995, was made available to the public. Other volumes of his poetry include Dancing Naked on the Floor (2005), And Then You Know New and Selected Poems (2009), and Kupenda: Love Poems (published in 2000). Young adults were the intended audience for the poetry collection titled Crush: Love Poems (2007).
Together with poets Chris Colderley and Marjory Wentworth, Alexander published a collection of poetry in 2017 titled Out of Wonder, in which they pay homage to 20 of their favorite writers. The 2018 Coretta Scott King Book Award went to Ekua Holmes for her illustrations in Out of Wonder, which earned her the award.
In 2020, Alexander wrote a book of poetry titled Light for the World to See: A Thousand Words on Race and Hope. These poems were inspired by historical events such as the murder of George Floyd, the protests of football star Colin Kaepernick, and the election of Barack Obama as president of the United States.
Alexander’s other literary triumphs include the creation of tales geared at younger audiences. The story “Indigo Blume and the Garden City” from 2010 is about a little girl and the garden she keeps on her roof. Jazz is presented to young children in the 2011 film “Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band” via the medium of animals.
The 2016 animated film Surf’s Up recounts the exploits of two frogs, one of whom loves to read and the other who wants to go surfing. Alexander contributed words to the anthology Animal Ark: Celebrating Our Wild World in Poetry and Pictures (2017), which included photos of animals with the photographs.
The Undefeated, released in 2019, is an ode to the existence of black people in the United States. In 2020, the novel was selected as a Newbery Honor novel. The artwork of Kadir Nelson, who drew the illustrations for “The Undefeated,” earned him both the Caldecott Medal and the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award in the year 2020.
Alexander also authored works aimed at a more mature demographic. The connection between two high school seniors, one a football star and the other a social activist, is the subject of the 2013 film He Said, She Said, which is geared at young adults. The Crossover is a novel by Alexander that won several awards and tells the story of twin African American boys who are 12 years old and passionate about basketball. Rebound (2018) is a prequel to The Crossover and focuses on the twins’ father rather than the twins themselves.
In Booked (2016), Alexander used free verse to examine a boy’s connection with his family and friends as he navigates a soccer injury, bullying, and his unwillingness to read. This time, the book focuses on the boy’s journey to overcome his resistance to reading. Becoming Muhammad Ali (2020), a fictitious recreation of the boxer’s upbringing written by James Alexander in collaboration with author James Patterson combines prose and poetry.
Both “Solo” (2017) and “Swing” (2018), which Mary Rand Hess co-wrote, tackle weightier subjects such as “drug addiction” and “social divisions.” In 2022, Alexander released “The Door of No Return,” the first book in a trilogy he was writing about a young boy living in the African region known as Ghana who became caught up in transatlantic slave traffic.
Alexander also contributed to a piece that discussed the more practical elements of becoming an author. Together with Nina Foxx, he wrote and released the book Do the Write Thing: Seven Steps to Publishing Success in 2002. Writing workshops may benefit youngsters of school age, as he addressed in his 2018 book “The Write Thing.”
In addition to his writing, Alexander has been involved in several projects that benefit the local community. Book-in-a-Day is an instructional literacy service that he established in 2006. It is a non-profit organization. By encouraging youngsters to create poetry and publish their work, the group is helping to foster a love of reading and writing among younger generations.
Literacy Empowerment Action Project (LEAP) is a non-profit organization that Alexander co-founded in 2012. LEAP’s mission is to expand educational possibilities in Ghana. Additionally, he regularly contributes to Morning Edition, the daily news show broadcast on National Public Radio.
