The members of KISS will be the first to tell you how terrific they are and how much they mean to the world. “You wanted the best, and you got it!” says the opening of their breakthrough album, Alive!, which was released in 1975. “KISS!” exclaims the hottest band in the country. Any discussion about KISS must, sadly, include a mention of the lasting animosity that exists amongst the group’s original four members. When it comes to alleged business tactics, KISS is sometimes wrongly accused, as though the band’s ultimate purpose has always been to make money via licencing and merchandise sales. As a result, the band’s hard ethic, their real love of music, and their longtime advocacy of rock n’ roll as the ultimate expression of freedom are ignored. Stanley talks of the band’s history in almost mystical terms, as if a supernatural force brought them together and taught them how to apply the Kabuki-inspired face paint that indicated who they were or who they wanted to be. The band’s evolution is described in almost mystical terms by Stanley. Whatever his feelings about the original lineup, Stanley acknowledges that they were “the total bigger than the parts,” and that in Ace Frehley they had discovered a guitarist whose “solo performances made sense.”
However, despite the fact that KISS’s flamboyant look and use of pyrotechnics made them a popular concert draw, their record sales were disappointing until Alive! captured the energy of their live performance on four vinyl LP sides. Within three years, they had risen to become one of the most popular rock bands in the United States. Issues of creative control, artistic integrity, and a gruelling work schedule would erode the band’s ability to function as a unit. “Now throw in some narcotics,” Simmons continues. Criss was no longer with the company by 1980, whether he was dismissed or resigned. Frehley left the company two years later. “Fame doesn’t alter you; it only enables you to continue to be the asshole you are,” Stanley summarises the relationship’s end.
For the following decade, KISS struggled to find success. They removed their makeup in search of a fresh start, and they capitalised on the opportunity with an MTV special. Where they were formerly considered proto-metal pioneers, they are now considered trend followers. Some made commercially successful music, while others created music they were proud of. By the 1990s, they began putting on KISS conventions, exhibiting memorabilia, and selling artefacts to raise money for the band.
They sometimes performed acoustic shows, setting the framework for Kiss Unplugged, which was released in 1996 and resulted in a reunion of the original band. While touring with Frehley and Criss, the group generated millions of dollars, but the same difficulties resurfaced. Since 2002, Simmons and Stanley have been accompanied on stage by Eric Singer, a drummer from the early 1990s, and Tommy Thayer, a guitarist from the same era, both dressed in the makeup of their predecessors. To put it another way, “It’s not called music friends, it’s called music business,” Singer adds of his own position in the band.
Biography: KISStory is a four-hour film that is both thorough and taxing due to its length. While the band’s kitchen-sink approach to commemorating its history is unconventional, it is consistent with their time-honored habit of giving their fans everything they want and more. At the time of shooting, KISS was in the midst of The End Of The Road Tour, a two-year, 174-show hajira that was said to be their last tour before retirement. Despite the fact that the Covid epidemic caused a year’s worth of cancellations, the tour is set to continue in August.
