Bio

Kirby Smart (born December 23, 1975) is a former player and coach in the National Football League. He is the current Georgia Bulldogs’ head football coach. Smart grew up in Bainbridge, Georgia, after being born in Montgomery, Alabama. Smart started his football career at Bainbridge High School and moved on to the University of Georgia, where he played alongside defensive lineman Antonio Cochran and Emarlos Leroy, linebacker Brandon Tolbert, and Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey. Smart was a four-year starter at defensive back for Georgia and was named to the SEC’s first team as a senior. He concluded his career with 13 interceptions, fourth all-time at Georgia, and led the Bulldogs with six interceptions in 1997 and five interceptions in 1998. He was also a four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member. Smart earned a finance degree from Georgia in 1999.

In the 1999 NFL Draft, he went undrafted and signed a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts. He was with the team throughout the preseason in 1999, but was released before the regular season began.Smart started his coaching career as an administrative assistant at the University of Georgia in 1999. He subsequently went to Valdosta State, where he was the defensive backs coach for one season before being promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2001 season. Smart worked as a graduate assistant under Bobby Bowden at Florida State from 2002 to 2003 while completing a master’s degree. In 2003, he earned his master’s degree from FSU.

In 2004, Smart served as the defensive backs coach at LSU under head coach Nick Saban for one season. For the 2005 season, Smart returned to the Georgia Bulldogs as the running backs coach. Smart’s only season in the NFL was in 2006, when he worked under Saban once more, this time as the Miami Dolphins’ safeties coach. In 2007, he accompanied Nick Saban to the University of Alabama. On January 9, he was hired as an assistant coach by Saban. Smart was elevated to defensive coordinator on February 27, 2008. Smart received the Broyles Award for outstanding assistant coach in the country on December 8, 2009. He was the first assistant coach from Alabama to get the award.

Alabama would win the BCS National Championship in the end. Smart was offered a hefty deal to be the defensive coordinator at his alma mater, the University of Georgia, but in early January 2010, he decided to stay with the Crimson Tide. Smart’s defence helped Alabama win another national championship in 2011, when they defeated LSU in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game. The University of Alabama System’s Board of Trustees approved on March 27, 2012, to raise Smart’s compensation and extend his contract. Smart was named the AFCA FBS Assistant Coach of the Year on November 20, 2012. Alabama would go on to win another national title, this time defeating Notre Dame with a stout defence. Smart received a $200,000 raise on April 16, 2013, making him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in collegiate football.



On December 6, 2015, Smart was named the University of Georgia’s 26th head football coach.

In 2016, Smart led the Bulldogs to an 8–5 record in his first season as head coach. In the SEC East, the Bulldogs tied for second place. Smart led the Bulldogs to their first 9–0 start since 1982 in 2017, and they won the SEC East with a win over the South Carolina Gamecocks on November 4. Smart led Georgia to its first SEC title since 2005 and only the fourth 12-win season in school history on December 2, 2017. (1980, 2002, 2012). The College Football Playoff Committee rated Georgia No. 3 on December 3, and the Bulldogs were scheduled to face No. 2 Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Georgia overcame Oklahoma 54–48 in double overtime, completing the biggest comeback in Rose Bowl history. The Bulldogs went on to lose 26-23 in overtime against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Alabama freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa substituted Jalen Hurts late in the game and concluded the game with a 41-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith. Georgia finished the regular season 11–1 and earned a berth in the 2018 SEC Championship game as the Eastern Division Champions.

The Georgia Bulldogs would face the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Western Division Champions. Georgia would lose against Alabama 35–28. Georgia has been invited to compete in the 85th Sugar Bowl Classic against the Texas Longhorns, who are ranked #15 in the country. Texas would go on to defeat the #5 Georgia Bulldogs 28-21, finishing the season with an 11–3 record.
Smart was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity’s Georgia Beta chapter, and he is married to Mary “Beth” Elizabeth Lycett, who was a basketball player for the University of Georgia. Weston, Julia, and Andrew are their three children.
