Kenny Pickett Bio

Kenneth Shane Pickett is an American football quarterback who was born on June 6, 1998. He now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are members of the National Football League. He attended the University of Pittsburgh during his collegiate football career, where he was honored with the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and was a Heisman Trophy candidate during his senior year. In the first round of the NFL Draft in 2022, he was chosen by the Steelers to join their team. Pickett was born on June 6th, 1998 in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Ocean Township, New Jersey, in the United States of America.

He received his high school education from Ocean Township. When Pickett was a junior, the Ocean Township Spartans, which he captained, finished with a record of 9–2 and advanced to the semifinal game in the New Jersey Central Group III tournament. During his senior season of high school football in New Jersey, Pickett was rated by 247Sports as the No. 23 overall player in the state. He completed passes for 4,670 yards and 43 touchdowns over the course of his career, and he also ran for 873 yards and 17 scores. After making a verbal promise to play collegiate football at Temple University, he ultimately decided to reverse his pledge and play for the University of Pittsburgh instead.

During the majority of his first year as a true freshman at Pittsburgh in 2017, Pickett served as a backup goalkeeper to both Max Browne and Ben DiNucci. It was the penultimate game of the season for Pittsburgh, and they were playing the second-ranked Miami Hurricanes. That game was his first career start. He completed 18 of 29 throws for 193 yards and a touchdown while leading the club to an unexpected win, and he also ran for 60 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground. He finished the year having completed 39 of 66 passes for a total of 509 yards, scoring one touchdown while also throwing one interception.

In 2018, Pittsburgh kept Pickett as their starting quarterback. He started all 14 games for his team, throwing for 1,969 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions while completing 180 of 310 passes. During Pickett’s first year as Pittsburgh’s full-time starting quarterback, the team won the ACC Coastal Division Championship for the very first time in school history. At one point in the 2018 season, the Associated Press placed the Panthers as high as the 24th-best team in the USA. In the Sun Bowl, the Panthers were defeated by Stanford by a score of 14–13.

In 2019, Pickett continued his role as the starting quarterback, earning 12 starts while being out for just one game due to an injury. He was successful in 289 of 469 pass attempts, throwing for 3,098 yards and 13 touchdowns but also throwing nine interceptions. This was the first season for Pickett with Mark Whipple as the offensive coordinator. Whipple upped the number of passes the team threw each week, therefore this was Pickett’s first season with him. The Panthers finished the regular season with a record of 7–5 to qualify for the playoffs.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles were beaten by the Pittsburgh Panthers 34–30 in the 2019 Quick Lane Bowl, which took place in Detroit. In the waning minutes of the game, Pickett delivered a touchdown pass to wide receiver Taysir Mack that proved to be the game-winning score. Pickett finished the game with 361 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Before the selection, a number of journalists analyzed Pickett for the size of his hands, which were measured at 812 inches. They believed that this may make him more likely to fumble the ball in game situations. The Pittsburgh Steelers picked him up in the first round of the 2022 NFL selection, which was the 20th overall pick. This was the latest that a quarterback has been chosen in the first round of a selection since 1997. On September 6, 2022, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they had selected Pickett to serve as the team’s backup quarterback to Mitchell Trubisky.

After Mitchell Trubisky was pulled from the game in Week 4’s defeat to the New York Jets, Pickett made his first appearance in the National Football League in the second half of the game. In the defeat by a score of 24–20, he threw three interceptions and completed 10 of 13 passes for 120 yards while also scoring two touchdowns on the ground. The first pass that Pickett has attempted in his career was intended for Chase Claypool but was picked off by Jordan Whitehead. The pass was a deep one. Pickett scored his first-ever touchdown in his NFL career on the second drive of his second possession by scrambling into the end zone.

Mike Tomlin, the team’s head coach, announced Pickett’s promotion to the starting lineup on October 4, 2022. Pickett made his first start of his career against the Buffalo Bills and completed 34 of 51 passes for 327 yards while also throwing an interception. The game ended with a score of 38–3. Pickett delivered his first touchdown throw to Najee Harris in Week 6 of the NFL season while the Carolina Panthers were playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, Pickett left the game with a concussion in the third quarter. Pickett earned his first victory of his career after leading the Steelers to a 20–18 victory against the Buccaneers.

Pickett had another concussion during the game against the Baltimore Ravens, which took place in Week 14. He was declared out for the game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 15, but the following week, in Week 16, he started the game against the Las Vegas Raiders. During the game, he was responsible for the game-winning touchdown pass of 14 yards that was completed to George Pickens with less than a minute remaining. As a result, the Steelers were victorious 13–10.

For the second consecutive game, Pickett delivered the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining on the clock. This time, he did it by throwing a 10-yard pass to Najee Harris against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17 action. The Steelers won 16–13, which kept their prospects of making the playoffs alive. In the history of the NFL, Pickett would be the only rookie quarterback to ever attempt and complete a game-winning touchdown pass in the last minute of the fourth quarter in two consecutive games.

Pickett and the Panthers finished with a record of 6–5 in the abbreviated season that was played because of the COVID-19 epidemic. During the time in which Pickett participated, he passed for 2,408 yards, 13 touchdowns, and nine interceptions over the nine games he appeared. At one time during the 2020 season, the Associated Press placed the Panthers as high as the No. 21 team in the nation. Despite the fact that they were qualified to play in a bowl game, the Panthers jointly decided against taking part in any postseason play.

Pickett made the most of his last year of eligibility and emerged as one of the most talented players in the country at that time. He established school records for both the number of yards and touchdowns scored in a single season as well as the number of yards and touchdowns scored in a career with his 4,319 yards and 42 touchdowns. Pickett received recognition as a member of the first-team All-Americans and competed for the Heisman Trophy, ultimately coming in third place.

Pittsburgh concluded the season with a record of 11–2 in games that Pickett started and won the ACC Championship, the school’s best record since 1976. After earning his bachelor’s degree in marketing and enrolling in the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, he became a graduate student. In July of the same year, Pickett was awarded the men’s ACC Athlete of the Year across all sports, sharing the title with Charlotte North of Boston College lacrosse, who was the winner of the award for the women’s division. Pickett made advantage of the opportunity afforded to him by the NCAA to gain an additional year of eligibility in order to continue his role as the starting quarterback for the Panthers in the 2021 season.
