Keeley Hawes is an English actress and producer most known for her work in the television series Line of Duty, Bodyguard, and Mrs. Wilson. Her performances in these series got her nominations for BAFTA awards in each of those categories. In addition, she has been praised for her performances in the drama series The Durrells, It’s a Sin, and The Missing. Earlier in her career, she gained notoriety for her roles in the drama series Tipping the Velvet, the espionage drama series Spooks, and the crime fantasy series Ashes to Ashes, all shown on the BBC.
Hawes debuted in the film industry with the movie Avengers in 1998. Since then, she has had roles in several additional movies, including Death at a Funeral, Misbehavior, and To Olivia. In addition, she has provided the voice of Lara Croft, the main character of the Tomb Raider video game series (which has been released in seven different versions). In the television seasons of 2020-2021, she took on the role of executive producer for the programs Honour and Finding Alice. In addition to working in cinema and television, she has also done work in the theater.
She started working part-time while attending school in various locations, including McDonald’s, a Sainsbury grocery store, and a stand at an antique market. In addition to that, she acted in both plays and commercials. In 1989, she made her debut on television in an episode of Forever Green, and the following year, she featured in a total of six episodes of the series Troublemakers. After a couple of years had passed, she appeared on an episode of the crime drama series The Ruth Rendell Mysteries.
She was discovered by a modeling agency on Oxford Street when she was just sixteen years old, and she went on to perform some modeling work for six months after that. After some time had passed, she started working for the fashion section of the magazine Cosmo.
She landed her first part as an adult in the television miniseries Karaoke (1996), which was directed by Dennis Potter when she was working there. During the same year, she also had roles in the television shows Pie in the Sky and Heartbeat and a starring role in the television movie The Moonstone. Keeley Hawes made her début in the film industry the same year, 1998, with the role of Tamara in the espionage action flick Avengers. The year after that, she appeared as an actress in the dramatic film The Last September.
She had roles in the BBC adaptations of classic and contemporary works of literature, Our Mutual Friend and Wives and Daughters, which aired between 1998 and 1999 on the BBC. 1999 saw her represent the younger version of actress Diana Dors in the biographical miniseries The Blonde Bombshell, produced by Diana Dors herself.
During this period, she appeared in the music videos of a few different songs. These songs include “Come Around” by The Mutton Birds, “Marvellous” by The Lightning Seeds, “Saturday Night” by Suede, and “She’s a Star” by James. The first two were also Top Ten singles in the United Kingdom.
In the early years of the new century, she appeared in several television episodes, such as Hotel! and Murder in Mind (both in 2001), as well as A, Is for Acid and Me and Mrs. Jones (both in 2002) before she was cast in two BBC productions that solidified her position as an actor.
The first was a miniseries titled Tipping the Velvet (2002), which was based on Sarah Waters’s best-selling book of the same name, published in 1998. The male impersonator, Kitty Butler, was a character Hawes portrayed on the program. The second program she participated in was an espionage drama called Spooks, which ran from 2002 to 2004, and she played the lead character of Zoe Reynolds in that show.
The following year, in 2003, she appeared in an episode of the BBC adaptation of six of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales into contemporary settings. The attack was called “The Knight’s Tale.” During the same year, she also appeared in an episode of the television movie Lucky Jim. This was then followed by other work in television shows such as Murdoch Mysteries (2004), Shakespeare Re-Told (2005), Agatha Christie’s Marple (2005), The Best Man (2005), and After Thomas (2005).
Complicity (2000), Chaos and Cadavers (2003), and A Cock and Bull Story (2005) are three of her films that were released during this period. In the year 2001, she also featured in the television movie Othello. In the British dark comedy film Death at a Funeral, released in 2007, she portrayed the role of Jane.
After making guest appearances in a handful of episodes of the British comedy The Vicar of Dibley (2006-2007), she was cast as the lead character, Alex Drake, in the crime, drama, and fantasy series Ashes to Ashes (2008-2010), which aired on the BBC. The second accomplishment garnered a great deal of admiration for her.
She was recruited to provide the voice of Lara Croft, the protagonist of the Tomb Raider video game series, between 2006 and 2009, and she did so successfully. She subsequently provided the voice for the character in a different action-adventure video game titled Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (2010), as well as the sequel titled Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (2012).
She originated the leading character of Lady Agnes Holland in the costume drama Upstairs, Downstairs (2012-2014), which she portrayed from 2010 to 2012. After waiting a few more years, she was cast as the essential part of Detective Inspector Lindsay Denton in the drama Line of Duty, which Jed Mercurio wrote. The program, which aired from 2014 to 2016, attained unprecedented popularity and helped elevate Keeley’s profile. In 2016, she portrayed Gemma Webster in the BBC One thriller The Missing and took on the part of Louisa Durrell in the ITV comedy-drama series The Durrells. Both of these roles were played by her in 2016. The latter program aired until 2019.
Once again collaborating on a project together in 2018, Mercurio and Keeley Hawes produced the political thriller series Bodyguard, which consisted of six episodes. The show, in which she portrayed the fictitious home secretary Julia Montague, became one of the most popular dramas in the United Kingdom, and she once again garnered a great deal of acclaim due to her performance.
