He started his football career as a young player for Aberdeen when he was a teenager. When he graduated high school, he joined Greenock Morton, his hometown’s professional football team. Compston participated in two games for the first team during the 2001–02 season, when the club was demoted to the Third Division. Morton’s games against Alloa Athletic and Queen of the South, which he featured as a substitute, ended in defeat by a score of 4-0. Following his departure from Morton, he played junior football with Greenock Juniors.

Even though Compston had never performed in front of an audience before, he was chosen for the central part in Ken Loach’s Sweet Sixteen, which was being shot in the area. The critical acclaim that the picture received at the Cannes Picture Festival catapulted him to an instant superstar in Scotland. He was a recurring character in the television series Monarch of the Glen that aired on the BBC. He then appeared in three films: A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, which won the Jury Prize and Best Ensemble Cast at the Sundance Festival; Red Road, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was shot in Scotland with Kate Dickie and Tony Curran; and True North, which starred Peter Mullan and Gary Lewis, and for which he was nominated as Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards. All three of these films were shot in Scotland.

Alongside Craig Parkinson, Compston portrayed Joe McCain in the film Soulboy, released in 2010, and they both had starring roles. Alongside Craig Parkinson once again, Compston acted as a detective on an anti-corruption unit in the BBC police drama Line of Duty in the year 2012.

After that, he played the central part in The Wee Man, directed by Ray Burdis and about the life of the Glasgow mobster Paul Ferris. Since he was born in Scotland, he returned to his Scottish origins for this role. It was made available to the public in the UK in January 2013.

Compston had a starring role in the miniseries The Ice Cream Girls that aired on ITV in April of 2013. In the movie “The Great Train Robbery,” he played Roy James.
