Katie Noonan was born on 2 May 1977. Maggie Noonan, an opera singer, and Brian Noonan, a journalist, and vocalist, met on the set of the performance TV show Showcase, where they both received audience and judging votes, respectively. They felt it was important to immerse their children in music from an early age. Her sibling Tyrone Noonan was similarly shaped by their childhood, and in 1996 the two of them created the band George to compete in a talent show. She also released an album under her own name with the jazz trio Elixir, which she co-founded with her future husband Zac Hurren in 1998.
Katie hadn’t finished her opera and jazz studies at the Queensland Conservatorium yet, and George didn’t record his first album until 2002. Polyserena, the album in question, debuted at No. 1. In 2003, they returned to Byron Bay to record their follow-up album, entitled Unity. Katie and her mother Maggie also released a duets CD that year called Two of a Kind, which fused jazz and operatic styles.
Katie stopped making music after those two albums were out so she could get married and start a family. In 2005, she collaborated with jazz pianist Paul Grabowsky on an album titled Before Time Could Transform Us, a cycle of songs by Dorothy Porter. While expecting her second child, she headed to Linear Studios in Sydney to work on a solo album. In 2007, the album Skin was released.
To say that Noonan is now on fire would be an understatement. Two weeks from now, on the eve of her 30th birthday, she will release these potent new songs in sold-out shows at Sydney’s Vanguard. She has just concluded work on her wonderful debut solo album, Skin. She’s head over heels in adoration. Noonan and her saxophonist husband Zac Hurren had their second kid six months ago.
Noonan rose to fame in the 1990s as the lead singer of the Brisbane band George, which she co-founded with her brother Tyrone. Polyserena, their 2002 album, went double platinum and received an ARIA award for Best News Artist Album that year. In Australia, Noonan achieved cult status thanks to her captivating performances and classically trained voice. Now that George has taken a long hiatus, the Noonan siblings can each make their own solo albums. “Moving sideways,” as Noonan puts it.
The record was laid down on older equipment in both Sydney and Los Angeles, contributing to its retro, organic vibe. He has a collection of vintage gear including tape recorders, microphones, and compressors. The majority of the album was recorded directly onto 2-inch 16-track tape, all in analog. It reminds me of vinyl records rather than compact discs, and the music sounds better for it.”
Noonan’s collaboration with Karin Schaupp, Songs of the Tropical Skies, was slated for publication in December 2016. On their upcoming album, which is scheduled for release in February 2017, the duo will travel across the South American repertoire, taking in the rhythms and styles of the bossa nova, salsa, tango, and samba along the way. Beginning in the middle of March, the duo will perform live gigs all throughout the country.
Transmutant, Noonan’s 2015 album, was released by Universal Music Australia. The album reached a high position on the ARIA Charts of 33. She had an album, Fiery Hearts, nominated for an ARIA Award in 2014. Circa performed their modern circus act to music. Noonan re-recorded songs from her days with George and Elixir for her 2013 CD Songbook. She also participated in the staging of Les Illuminations with the Sydney Dance Company.
In July 2013, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd established a National Office for Live Music; since August 2013, Noonan has served as the state ambassador for Queensland. In 2013, Noonan sang Britten’s song cycle Les Illuminations in Sydney’s City Recital Hall Angel Place with the Sydney Dance Company, musicians from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and director Richard Gill. In 2014, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane hosted this play, including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Johannes Fritzsch.
In 1997, Noonan formed the jazz group Elixir, which released its first album under that name in 2003. First Seed Ripening, the second album by Elixir, was released on August 5, 2011. The album was named the best jazz album at the 2011 ARIA Awards.
Noonan and Karin Schaupp traveled together as Songs from the British Isles in 2011. Noonan has an EP out now, and it’s exclusive to his website. The pair released Songs of the Southern Sky in 2012. Two 2012 ARIA Award nominations were submitted for the album.
