\ Tiwatope Savage-Balogun was born on February 5, 1980. The singer doesn’t talk much about her family, however, there are rumors that she has three siblings. Her cosmopolitan childhood was shaped by her family’s move to London, UK when she was 11 years old. Savage was a trombone player in the orchestra band while in high school in the United Kingdom.
Reportedly well-versed in the intricacies of the global music industry, Savage attended the fictitious “University of Kent” and graduated with a degree in business administration. After finishing his education, Savage spent some time working for the “Royal Bank of Scotland.”
After getting the chance to sing in Mary J. Blige’s backing choir, she chose to devote herself more fully to music. She attended the prestigious “Berklee College of Music” on a full scholarship and earned her degree when she was 27 years old. Her musical career took off after that. Tiwa Savage is a multi-talented artist who has quickly risen to prominence in Nigeria’s music scene. The Grammy-nominated singer got her to start performing background vocals for George Michael and has since collaborated with the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, and Chaka Khan.
Savage has been performing for 22 years, and during that time she has shared the stage with many famous acts. She has penned songs for Grammy-winning artists like Babyface and ‘American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. As of the year 2018, she has published two full-length albums and appeared on one compilation album. Savage presently has two recording contracts, one with the Nigerian label Mavin Records and another with the publishing company Sony/ATV Music Publishing. In 2016, she also shared news of a management and publishing partnership with ‘Roc Nation,’ a subsidiary of ‘Sony’ co-founded by JAY-Z. Savage is fluent in two languages because she has spent time in both the English-speaking world and Nigeria. She frequently switches between English and Yoruba in her songs.
Her 2016 divorce was publicly disclosed that same year. She hasn’t taken her eye off the career prize. At the tender age of 16, Savage launched her career by providing vocal support for the British music superstar George Michael. She has since sung alongside such international superstars as Mary J. Blige, Blue Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, and Andrea Bocelli. She has appeared on stage alongside legends like Destiny’s Child, Sting, 50 Cent, ‘The Black Eyed Peas,’ Robbie Williams, and Eminem.
While still a student at Berklee, she auditioned for the UK version of “The X Factor” in 2006. Savage says her experience on the show, where she made it to the final 24, was a sobering look at the darker side of fame. Reportedly struggling with the pressure of the spotlight, the singer later called hearing that she had not made it to the top 12 a “traumatic” experience.
She signed a songwriting contract with music industry powerhouse ‘Sony/ ATV’ in 2009, which led to collaborations with artists including Fantasia Barrino, Monica, Babyface, and Ma. Her soul-influenced duet “Catch Me” with Monica stands out among these projects. The next year, they worked together again with Fantasia on a project called “Collard Greens & Cornbread,” which was nominated for a Grammy.
Savage penned the songs “Push Push” by Kat Deluna and “Oh Yeah” by Bajan pop musician Jaicko at this time. She contributed harmony vocals to Whitney Houston’s last album, “I Look to You”.
The 2011 film “For Coloured Girls,” a Nigerian version of an American play, marked the singer’s acting debut. Also, she made history by becoming the first female African musician to secure an endorsement agreement with “Pepsi.” For the second season of “Nigerian Idol,” she co-hosted with MC IllRymz.
When Savage met her future husband, Tunji Balogun, an A&R worker at ‘Interscope Records,’ she learned about the burgeoning Nigerian Afropop movement back home. Returning to Nigeria to launch her solo career, she was met with initial opposition. She persisted, though, and within a short time, she and Balogun had founded their own record company, 323 Entertainment.
Soon after its founding, ‘323 Entertainment’ began working with Mavin Records, the label of Grammy-winning Nigerian producer Don Jazzy. Savage herself inked a deal with “Mavin” in 2012 and appeared on the label’s “Solar Plexus” album the same year. After the massive success of his debut track, “Kele Kele Love,” which was published by both “Mavin” and “323,” Savage returned with “Ife Wa Gbona,” “Without My Heart,” and “Love Me,” all of which also received widespread critical praise. These tracks helped promote her award-nominated debut album, “Once Upon a Time,” released in 2013.
Savage continued her acting career in 2013 by guest starring in the ‘Shuga’ episode of the ‘MTV’ series. She quickly announced her desire to further her acting career, claiming she had “the knack.” She has also collaborated with companies including “MTN Nigeria,” “Nestlé’s” “Maggi,” and “Forte Oil.” On November 23, 2013, Savage wed Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun in a traditional ceremony. The next year, they repeated the “white wedding” in Dubai.
Savage and Balogun made the news of her pregnancy public in January 2015. In 2016, Balogun went on a Twitter rant, during which he accused his wife of cheating and her family of practicing witchcraft. Their marriage had been “finished for a while,” as Savage subsequently confessed since Balogun had a significant drug problem and was financially imprudent. She wants to create a music school so that other African children can have the same chances she did growing up. She has broken with conventional wisdom by advocating that women “go against the grain” and “work even harder” after having children.
