Julian Wyatt Glover CBE is a well-known English classical actor who began his career in the 1950s and has since appeared in a variety of roles on stage, on television, and in film. He was born on March 27, 1935. He was honored with the Laurence Olivier Award, and he has been in numerous productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Glover is best known for playing high-profile villains in almost every major motion picture franchise, including The Empire Strikes Back (1980), For Your Eyes Only (1981), The Fourth Protocol (1987), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). General Maximilian Veers in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Aristotle Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only (1981), and Brian Harcourt-Smith in The Fourth Protocol (1987) are just a few examples.
In addition, he provided the voice of the enormous Acromantula spider Aragog in the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), and he also had a role in the psychological thriller Tár (2022) as conductor Andris Davis. Glover has also been seen quite regularly on television, particularly in Britain. Some of the cult shows in which he has been a guest include The Avengers, The Saint, Thriller, Doctor Who, Blake’s 7, Remington Steele, and Inside No. 9.
In the HBO series Game of Thrones (2011–2016), he appeared as the supporting character Grand Maester Pycelle, and in the BBC drama Spies of Warsaw (2013), he played the part of General Beauvilliers. Glover’s mother, Honor Ellen Morgan (née Wyatt), worked as a journalist for the BBC, while his father, Claude Gordon Glover, worked as a radio producer for the BBC. Glover was born in Hampstead, London. Glover and Wyatt got a divorce in the 1940s, after the birth of their daughter Prue, and Honor Wyatt later married George Ellidge. Prue was named after Glover. Robert Wyatt, a musician, is Julian Glover’s younger half-brother. Julian is Glover’s older half-brother.
While at Bristol Grammar School, Glover was in the same class as future stars Timothy West and David Prowse. Both West and Prowse went on to have acting careers. In addition, he was educated at Alleyn’s School, which is located in Dulwich, London. It was in 1954 when he received his diploma from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In addition to that, he fulfilled his national service obligation by serving in the British Army, where he completed the officers’ training course.
At the beginning of the 1950s, Glover made many appearances at the Unity Theatre in London. In 1962, he played the role of Tolen in Ann Jellicoe’s production of The Knack at the Royal Court Theatre. This adaptation has been included in documentaries pertaining to both the English language and Anglo-Saxon England. In addition, it was used for the historian Michael Wood’s documentary on the poem, which was broadcast during the BBC Poetry Season in 2009 in the United Kingdom.
