Chipper Jones Bio

Larry Wayne “Chipper” Jones Jr. was an American retired professional baseball third baseman who played for the Atlanta Braves in Major League Baseball from 1993 to 2012. He was born on April 24, 1972, and his baseball player name is Larry Wayne “Chipper” Jones Jr. In the 1990 Major League Baseball draft, the Braves selected Jones as the first choice overall. In addition to that, he was a part of their World Series-winning squad in 1995, which prevailed over the Cleveland Indians. Jones was selected for the All-Star Game eight times throughout his career. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the National League in 1999 and earned the NL Silver Slugger Award for third basemen in 1999 and 2000.

In 2008, he hit.364, which was good enough to win the batting title in Major League Baseball. Jones started playing baseball in high school at Taylor High School, where he threw a no-hitter as a freshman. Jones went on to play baseball at other high schools. As a sophomore, he transferred to The Bolles School, where he was a versatile football player who saw action on both offense and defense. As a pitcher, he had a win–loss record of 6–3 with 87 strikeouts and an earned run average of 1.89. In addition, he had a batting average of.391 and seven home runs, which earned him a spot on the First Team All-State for baseball.

Jones was named to the First Team All-State in both football and baseball in 1989, the same year that he also won the state title in baseball. In addition to being named the tournament’s most valuable player, he finished his pitching career with an 11–1 record, an earned run average of 0.81, and 107 strikeouts in 84 innings thrown. During Jones’s senior season with the Bulldogs, the team finished as the runner-up in the state championship game. Jones had a 7–3 record on the mound, a 1.00 ERA, and 100 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched. At the plate, he hit.488 and stole 14 bases.

The Gatorade Circle of Champions competition was won by Jones. He won the titles of Florida Baseball Player of the Year and Regional Baseball Player of the Year, finished as the runner-up for the title of National Player of the Year, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Florida High School Athletic Association in 2012. Jones decided to attend the University of Miami after receiving a scholarship to play collegiate baseball there.

Jones was a member of the Macon Braves, which was Atlanta’s class-A minor league club in the year 1991. In 473 at-bats, he had a batting average of.326, along with 24 doubles, 11 triples, 15 home runs, 40 stolen bases, 69 walks, and 79 strikeouts. On the defensive side of the ball, he committed 56 mistakes while playing shortstop. In 1992, Jones progressed his playing career by joining the Braves’ class A-advanced minor league affiliate, the Durham Bulls. After 70 games, Jones had a batting average of.277. He was subsequently promoted to the double-A level with the Greenville Braves, where he reduced the number of errors he committed from 56 in the previous season to 32.

Following a successful campaign, Jones began his professional baseball career with the Richmond Braves of the Triple-A level. There, he appeared in 139 games before getting promoted to the Atlanta Braves of the Major Leagues. Jones was engaged in a bench-clearing altercation with future major league players Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome while he was playing in the Braves minor league system. During that time, Jones was a member of the Braves. Through the course of the years, Thome and Jones would ultimately become close friends with one another.

In addition to that, under the direction of the Braves organization, he switched positions and now plays third base instead of shortstop. On September 11, 1993, Jones made his debut in the big leagues. At the time, he was the youngest player in the league. After the veteran Ron Gant suffered a broken leg over the summer while riding a dirt bike, it was anticipated that he would fight for the starting left field position in 1994. However, during spring training, Jones sustained a rupture to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. As a direct consequence of this, he was placed on the disabled list for the whole of the strike-shortened 1994 season.

Jones topped all rookies in the big leagues in many categories in 1995, including runs batted in, games played, games started, plate appearances and at-bats, and runs scored. During that season, he placed in second place in the voting for the National League Rookie of the Year Award, which was won by the pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Hideo Nomo. Jones was a member of the Atlanta Braves baseball team that competed in the World Series in 1995. The Braves defeated the Cleveland Indians in the championship series, which was completed in six games. In addition, he participated in the 1996 World Series with the Braves, a series that was ultimately won by the New York Yankees in six games.

Jones not only scored the very first hit in the annals of Turner Field, but he also earned the very final official hit at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium before the facility was shut down and demolished in 1997. In 1998, Jones finished in ninth place in the vote for the National League Most Valuable Player Award. This was despite the fact that he had 123 runs scored and 96 walks, both of which were fourth highest in the league.

Jones called it a career in 2012 with a lifetime batting average of.303, career totals of 468 home runs and 1,623 runs driven in, respectively. Jones is now ranked third on the all-time home run list for the Braves and owns the record for the highest career on-base percentage with the Braves. He also has the most career RBIs for a third baseman, which is 1. Jones is second among switch hitters, behind only Eddie Murray, in terms of lifetime RBIs, and he is the only switch hitter in the history of Major League Baseball to have a career batting average of at least.300 and 400 home runs or more.

He was the first switch hitter in Major League Baseball history to achieve all of these batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging % benchmarks. He was the 18th player in MLB history to accrue 5,000 at-bats and end with at least a batting average of.300, an on-base percentage of.400, and a slugging percentage of.500.

On June 28, 2013, the Atlanta Braves honored Jones by inducting him into the team’s Hall of Fame and retiring his number 10 jersey. In the first year that he was eligible for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, on July 29, 2018, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. In the year 2020, Jones worked for ESPN as a color commentator. In 2021, he made his way back to the Braves organization, this time serving as an assistant hitting consultant.
