Julian Edelman Bio

Julian Francis Edelman is a former professional football player from the United States. He played wide receiver with the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL) for a total of 12 seasons. Edelman was born on May 22, 1986, in the United States. After playing college football as a quarterback for Kent State, he was taken by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft. With the Patriots, he made the adjustment to playing wide receiver and as a return specialist. Edelman was a mainstay in the Patriots receiving corps from the time he became a regular offensive starter in 2013 to the time he announced his retirement following the 2020 season.

Edelman was one of the most productive postseason receivers in the NFL, yet he was never nominated for a Pro Bowl despite his success. He holds the Super Bowl records for punt returns and first-half receptions in a single game, and he ranks third in receiving yards and receptions in the postseason. He has won the Super Bowl three times, and during his victories in Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LIII, he led all receivers in receiving yards during those games.

Edelman was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the lattermost due to the fact that he was responsible for more than half of his team’s receiving yards. Edelman was born in Redwood City, California, which is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. His mother’s maiden name was Gole, and his father, Frank Edelman, is a mechanic who operates A-1 Auto Tech. He has two siblings, a brother named Jason and a sister named Nicole.

Edelman was brought up in a Christian household, but in recent years he has had what he refers to as a “Jewish awakening.” Edelman stated that he was Jewish and celebrated Hanukkah in an interview with the NFL Network that took place in December 2013. His German-born father and Belgian-born mother brought him into the world in the city of Kitchener, in the province of Ontario, in Canada.

Edelman attended Woodside High School in Woodside, California, where he competed on the varsity football and baseball teams. Before he experienced a period of rapid growth, he weighed less than 100 pounds (45 kg) as a freshman, despite the fact that he was quite short. He was the starting quarterback for his high school team, and as a senior in 2004, he guided the Wildcats to a perfect 13-0 record under his direction.

When Edelman was a senior in high school, he threw for 2,237 yards and 29 touchdowns while also rushing for 964 yards and 13 touchdowns. Edelman attended the College of San Mateo for a period of one year after graduating from high school. There, he tossed for 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns while also setting a new school record for rushing yards with 1,253 and scoring 17 times.

After that, he made the move to Kent State University, where he eventually graduated with a degree in business management. Edelman started as quarterback for all three of Kent State’s seasons when he was there. During his senior season, Edelman led the Golden Flashes in passing yards with 1,820, completed 56% of his throws (153 of 275), threw 13 touchdown passes, and had 11 interceptions. Additionally, he was their team’s leading rusher, racking up 1,370 yards on 215 carries (an average of 6.4 yards per attempt) and scoring 13 touchdowns in the process.

His total offense shattered the school record for a single season, which had been held by Joshua Cribbs since 2003. Prior to the 2009 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots held private workouts with Edelman and selected him with the 27th selection of the seventh round (232nd overall). This placed Edelman ahead of Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer, who later signed with the Patriots as free agency.

Several commentators speculated that the Patriots may have taken Edelman because of his potential in a Wildcat formation;  nevertheless, when the pick was made, he was announced as a wide receiver. Edelman joined the Patriots on July 16, 2009, and as part of the deal, he received a signing bonus of $48,700. The contract was for four years. Later on, Edelman revealed that he had always been aware that he lacked the potential to make it onto an NFL team as a quarterback, and because of this, he had trained himself to play positions other than quarterback before the draft.

The British Columbia Lions placed Edelman on their “negotiation list,” which is a list of American athletes for whom they have exclusive negotiating rights, and they presented him with a contract to play quarterback that was three years long and heavily weighted in terms of incentives. Edelman returned a punt for 75 yards on August 13, 2009, during a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. As a result of his performance, the Patriots decided to keep him on the club rather than former Eagles wide receiver Greg Lewis, for whom the Patriots had traded a fifth-round selection pick in 2009.

Due to an ankle injury, Edelman was unable to play in the Patriots Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills. However, he made his first career start in the Patriots’ 16–9 loss to the New York Jets in Week 2, which was also the first game that Wes Welker has missed since joining the Patriots in 2007. For a total of 138 all-purpose yards, Edelman led all receivers with eight receptions for 98 yards, contributed 38 yards on two kickoff returns, and added 2 yards on a punt return.

After suffering an arm injury in the Patriots’ 59–0 demolition of the Tennessee Titans, Edelman did not go with the team to London for their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Instead, he remained in the United States to recover from his injury. When he went down with his injury, Edelman had 21 receptions, which put him in first place among all rookies. Upon his return with the Patriots in Week 10 against the Indianapolis Colts, he scored his first official touchdown in the National Football League on a reception from Tom Brady that covered 9 yards.
