Joonas Suotamo, a Finnish actor and basketball player, was Peter Mayhew’s stand-in for Chewbacca in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He was born on October 3, 1986, in Espoo, Uusimaa, Finland. But his time at Penn State as a basketball player wasn’t everything he had hoped it would be. He admitted that his time with the Nittany Lions was regrettably marred by injuries in an interview from 2016. I could never give it my all, he admitted. It was just the kind of situation where I eventually realized I needed to concentrate on other goals. Naturally, portraying Chewbacca entails being a part of a narrative that features galactic battles and war.
Suotamo had prior experience serving in the military before joining the Star Wars cast. Suotamo served in the Finnish army after his graduation from Penn State before going back to Finland. Between the ages of 18 and 29, Finnish nationals are required to serve between six months and a year in the military.
