Jonathan Van Ness was born on March 28, 1987. His mother is a descendant of the Oakley family, who have run the Quincy Media Media conglomerate since the 1890s.
He is the youngest of four children his mother had from her two marriages; his parents divorced when he was five, and his mother remarried her childhood sweetheart four years later. His mother, whom he regards as his best friend, urged him to completely embrace his femininity, but this did not prevent him from experiencing bullying and even death threats in school.
Once upon a time, “behind closed doors,” he would play dress up with his Barbie dolls by donning “every nail varnish, every stiletto, every scarf.” But, he outgrew this act and resorted to playing with his dolls while wearing his pajamas. While attending Quincy Senior High School, he made history by becoming the school’s first male cheerleader, bucking decades of norms. He also took up gymnastics, ballet, and violin classes, and participated in talent events.
After being sexually abused by an older man at church, he began indulging in bad behaviors out of shame. He used to spend a lot of time as a young teenager having sex with men much older than himself in AOL chat rooms. He decided to complete high school early and go to college since he wanted to get away from his tiny town during his junior year. He attended the University of Arizona for a semester on a cheering scholarship, intending to study political science but instead spending most of his money on television and drugs.
He tried out for the team again after being kicked off, but then dropped out to become a hairstylist. To make ends meet, he took out a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant loan and worked at Sun Places Tanning Solutions so that he could afford to attend the Aveda School in Minneapolis after graduating from college. American hairstylist, podcaster, and TV personality Jonathan Van Ness is well-known for being non-binary and openly gay in addition to serving as the grooming expert on the revived Netflix series Queer Eye alongside Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, and Bobby Berk.
His prior web series parodying HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones was a huge success. As of late, you may hear his voice in Heads Will Roll, an Audible original series. In addition, he hosts the show Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, a podcast. After publicly disclosing his HIV status in an interview, he began publishing his autobiography, Over the Top: A Painful Journey to Self-Love. In addition, he has staunch beliefs on political matters and Gay rights. He learned the trade from legendary Los Angeles hairstylist Sally Hershberger before founding his own salon, MoJoHair, and Stile.
At the age of 15, Jonathan Van Ness acquired his first work, and he spent the following five years at that employment teaching young gymnasts at a community college summer camp. Despite being the only sibling who did not join the family business, he worked in the circulation department of the family newspaper as his second job.
After spending 2005 and 2006 living off of tips as a stylist at Aveda, he moved to Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona, and stayed there for the following five years. He uprooted his life and went to Los Angeles in 2009 without much of a strategy. He was able to secure employment as an assistant at Sally Hershberger, but the pay was so low that he frequently returned to Arizona on weekends.
In 2012, he passed out while lightening a client’s hair and was tested for HIV at a Planned Parenthood clinic the next day because his symptoms mimicked the flu. In November 2013, when he and Monique Northrop made the decision to “get clean,” they used startup capital provided by a family trust to open the hair studio MoJoHair. In 2013, while Jonathan Van Ness was doing the hair of his friend Erin Gibson, a director for the comedy syndicate Funny or Die, he casually provided a high-energy summary of Game of Thrones. She came up with the concept for the parody recap web series Gay of Thrones in April 2013.
He did it for fun and didn’t get paid for the first season, but the show was so popular that it was renewed for five more years. In 2018, he had a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Best Short Form Variety Series put in his name.
The success of the show opened doors to working with other celebrities; he got to style Margaret Cho’s hair on Fashion Police for two seasons. I Love the ’00s featured him as a series regular on Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, which he started presenting in 2015 but didn’t become popular until much later.
In the Netflix revival of Queer Eye, he was chosen as the new grooming expert due to his ambition to join the Fab Five. The series debuted in February 2018 to critical acclaim and has now run for five full seasons. He has made countless guest appearances on TV shows, podcasts, and music videos throughout the years, including those of Kesha and Taylor Swift. In 2020, he starred as himself in the Taylor Swift biopic Miss Americana and co-starred with Meryl Streep, Peter Dinklage, and Kate McKinnon in the Audible original audio comedy Heads Will Roll.
