James Michael Bay was born on September 4, 1990. There, he spent his formative years and attended Hitchin Boys’ School. In a dusty corner of his home, he discovered a five-stringed guitar and began to play it.
When he turned 18, he uprooted and headed to Brighton to continue his education. There, he started performing at the city’s acoustic open mics. He claims it was crucial in his development as a songwriter and performer. He worked hard to compose tunes that would stir the hearts of the masses.
His debut studio album, “Chaos and the Calm,” and the single “Hold Back the River,” have both been critically acclaimed and commercially successful. His love for classical guitar began when he was 11 years old, and it blossomed when he moved to Brighton to attend university and began performing at open mic evenings there at the age of 18. A fan uploaded a video of Bay’s performance to YouTube, catching the attention of Republic Records A&R and ultimately leading to Bay’s signing with the company.
He debuted with the EPs “The Dark of the Morning” and “Let It Go,” and then went on to widespread acclaim with his full-length debut, “Chaos and the Calm,” and its lead song, “Hold Back the River,” which earned him a platinum certification and a Grammy nomination. Aside from “Let It Go,” “Scars,” and “If You Ever Want to Be in Love,” other chart-topping works by the young artist are worth mentioning as well.
Someone in London who attended one of his open mics posted a video of one of his sets on YouTube. The A&R at Republic Records saw the video and signed Bay to the company within a week. His debut EP, The Dark of the Morning, was released by Republic Records on July 18, 2013. In the same year, he went on a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland with the Irish band Kodaline.
On May 12 of the following year, Bay’s second EP, titled “Let It Go,” was released by Republic Records. The EP’s lead single, titled “Let It Go,” was released in Europe on September 15, 2014, and was written by Bay and British singer and musician Paul Barry and produced by Jacquire King. On September 27 of that year, the song reached #62 on the UK Singles Chart.
Bay and Ivor Novello Award winner Iain Archer collaborated on the song, which reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart and #1 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.
The success of Hold Back The River contributed to Bay’s growing notoriety. The Australian Recording Industry Association certified it three times Platinum, as did the British Phonographic Industry, the Dutch Phonographic Industry, and the Italian Phonographic and Music Industry Federation. On November 21, 2014, he dropped his third extended play titled “Hold Back the Water.” Together with Irish singer-songwriter Hozier, he toured North America that same year. In addition to performing live on the Burberry runway, he also recorded an acoustic session for the label.
His fourth extended play, titled Other Sides, was published by Republic Records on January 13, 2015. On March 23, 2015, Republic Records published his debut studio album, titled “Chaos and the Calm,” which was produced by American record producer, engineer, and mixer Jacquire King. The album, which was recorded in Nashville’s Blackbird Studios, debuted atop the UK Albums Chart on March 29, 2015. The album was certified 2 Platinum by both the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) Limited and Music Canada.
Re-releasing the song “Let It Go” from the album “Chaos and the Calm” took place in March of 2015. In July of 2015, the song reached #10 on the UK Singles Chart. It’s also Bay’s first charting single, peaking at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. In June 2015, Bay performed on the pyramid stage at the Glastonbury Festival, a five-day event that showcases contemporary performing arts and is held yearly near Pilton, Somerset, UK. In the same year, he joined Taylor Swift on her 1989 World Tour across Europe for her fourth studio album.
In addition to taking up the Critics’ Choice trophy at this year’s BRITs, he also took home honors at the GQ Men of the Year celebration, the Q Best New Act trophy at the Q Awards, and the Breakthrough Solo Artist trophy at the BRITs. Bay was nominated for three awards at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 15, 2016. The album “Chaos and the Calm” won best rock album, and the song “Hold Back the River” won best rock song.
Bay sang with Canadian artist Justin Bieber on his hit song “Love Yourself” at the 2016 Brit Awards on February 24 at London’s The O2. Bay also took home the prize for Best Male Solo Artist in the United Kingdom. In 2016, he took home three trophies: Best International Newcomer at the Echo Music Prize ceremony, Q Best Solo Artist at the Q Awards, and Most Performed Work at the Ivor Novello Awards for his song “Hold Back the Water.”
Bay recorded a rendition of Tom Petty’s “King’s Highway” for the Pixar-produced, Walt Disney Pictures-distributed, American 3D computer-animated comedy film “Cars 3,” which was released on June 16, 2017. The film’s official soundtrack album includes the cover version as well.
