John Madden, whose full name was John Earl Madden, was an American gridiron football coach and television commentator. He was one of the most well-known personalities in the history of the National Football League (NFL). Madden was born on April 10, 1936, in Austin, Minnesota, United States, and passed away on December 28, 2021. In addition to his achievements in the National Football League (NFL), John Madden gave his name to a series of video games called Madden NFL, which became a phenomenon in popular culture.
Madden spent his childhood in the city of Daly City, in the state of California, where he excelled as a high school football player. After graduating from California Polytechnic State University (in San Luis Obispo), where he was a member of both the offensive and defensive lines, he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1958 NFL Draft. The knee injury that he sustained during his first training camp was unfortunately enough to prohibit him from beginning a playing career in the NFL.
Between the years 1960 and 1963, he served as a coach at Hancock Junior College, which is located in Santa Maria, California. Between the years 1964 and 1966, he was the defensive coordinator at San Diego State University. It was in 1967 that Al Davis hired John Madden to be the linebackers coach for the Oakland Raiders. In February of 1969, while he was just 32 years old, Madden was elevated to the position of head coach.
The Raiders finished the season with a record of 12–1–1 under Madden’s direction, but they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs in the championship game of the American Football League (AFL). After the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the Raiders competed in the championship game of the American Football Conference (AFC) four times over the course of the next six seasons, but they were unsuccessful on all four occasions.
Just when the criticism that Madden could not win the big game reached its zenith, he led the Raiders to a one-loss season in 1976, which was followed by triumphs against the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings in the AFC championship game and Super Bowl XI, respectively. After 10 seasons as head coach of the Raiders, Madden stepped down after the 1978 season having never coached the team to a losing record in any of those seasons. In 2006, he was honored by being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Even though his accomplishment as a coach had gained him acclaim, John Madden did not become an icon irrevocably associated to the National Football League until he transitioned into a job as a football commentator for television. It was in 1979 that he was hired by CBS for his first post as a color commentator. Together with play-by-play announcer Pat Summerall, with whom Madden would form a 21-year partnership that made the pair arguably the most famous sports broadcasting duo in the history of sports broadcasting; the two moved to the Fox Broadcasting Company in 1994.
In 1981, he was paired with play-by-play announcer Pat Summerall. Madden and Summerall moved to the Fox Broadcasting Company in 1994. His idiosyncratic commentary, which included a willingness to explicate even the most complicated or obscure details of a football game; his frequent use of, and subsequent popularization of, the Telestrator, a device that allows its user to draw on top of an image from a broadcast; and his penchant for sudden outbursts (most notably “Boom!”) while analyzing a play, endeared him to many viewers (while alienating some others), and helped Mad Because of his well-known phobia of flying, he was forced to go to all of the places where he broadcasted games in a specially designed bus that became known as the “Madden Cruiser.”
This vehicle itself became something of a cult classic inside the National Football League. In addition to this, Madden was noted for choosing a “All-Madden” squad every year, which consisted of players he considered to be the most intelligent and tenacious in the game. In the course of his career, he was employed by each of the four main American broadcasting networks; nevertheless, in 2009, he decided to take early retirement.
Due to Madden’s outsized personality, he was a good candidate for the role of pitchman for a wide variety of items, ranging from beer to hardware shops. In 1989, he contributed his name to the video game John Madden Football, which was released under his name. The subsequent Madden NFL series expanded onto multiple gaming consoles and grew to become the most popular sports title on the market by the early 2000s.
The annual release of a new edition that was increasingly detailed and realistic became a highly anticipated event among both football fans and NFL players. Madden NFL 19 is the latest installment in the Madden NFL series. Because of its enormous success, the video game contributed to the expansion of football’s viewership around the world, which in turn boosted Madden’s reputation.
Together with cowriter Dave Anderson, John Madden is the author of a number of books that have achieved the status of best-sellers. Some of these works are Hey, Wait a Minute, I Wrote a Book (1984), One Size Doesn’t Fit All (1988), and All Madden: Hey, I’m Talking Pro Football! (1996).
The Acta Diurna, a news sheet that circulated in ancient Rome and is believed to have been published before to 59 BCE, is the first example of a journalistic product that we are aware of. The Acta Diurna was a daily journal that chronicled significant occurrences, such as public addresses. It was published each day, and it was displayed in conspicuous locations.
