John Kevin Crotty is a retired American professional basketball player. He was born on July 15, 1969, in the United States. Crotty, a point guard who graduated from the University of Virginia and stood 6 feet and one inch tall, went undrafted but went on to play in 11 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) between the years 1992 and 2003. Crotty entered the world of sports broadcasting after his retirement from the National Basketball Association and began working for the Miami Heat.
Crotty was selected as a member of the second team of the Parade All-Americans and as a McDonald’s All-American during his senior season with Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey. He also averaged 23 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals a game. He received offers to play college basketball from Notre Dame, North Carolina, Stanford, Villanova, and Virginia, but in the end, he chose to play for Virginia.
Crotty now holds the record for most assists in a single season at Virginia with 214 (1989–90). Crotty used to be in first place for Virginia’s all-time record for most career assists with 683, but on February 18, 2023, Kihei Clark overtook him into second place, moving Crotty’s total down to second place.
During his time at Virginia, he finished his career with 1,646 points scored and 12 double-doubles in point scoring and assist totals. In both 1990 and 1991, the All-ACC selection committee placed Crotty on the third team. In the 1991 tournament, he was selected for the first-team All-ACC Tournament, and in the 1990 tournament, he was selected for the second-team All-ACC Tournament

Crotty’s professional basketball career included stops with the Utah Jazz, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat, the Portland Trail Blazers, the Seattle SuperSonics, the Denver Nuggets, and the Detroit Pistons.
Crotty had a career in the NBA that spanned 477 games, and he finished it with a point total of 1,903. When Crotty finished his career in professional basketball, he transitioned into a role as a sports analyst for the Miami Heat. Crotty also holds the position of Principal in the Avison Young office located in Miami.
In his playing days, when he would make a long basket, his teammates would sometimes jokingly refer to it as a “Crotty Chop,” which is a pun on the term “Karate Chop.” In 2005, Crotty was hired on as the radio analyst for the Miami Heat. Crotty was given the job of serving as the team’s television analyst in November 2017, succeeding Tony Fiorentino in the role.
