James Robert Davis (born July 28, 1945) is a cartoonist best known for his work on the comic strips Garfield and U.S. Acres (also known as Orson’s Farm). Garfield is a nationally syndicated comic strip that has been running since 1978. Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, and Mr. Potato Head are some of Davis’s other comics.
All of the Garfield TV specials for CBS, which aired between 1982 and 1991, were written by Davis or co-written by him. From 1988 through 1994, he also produced the CBS series Garfield & Friends. Davis worked as a writer and executive producer on a series of CGI direct-to-video feature films featuring Garfield, as well as an executive producer on the CGI animated TV show The Garfield Show.
In Marion, Indiana, on July 28, 1945, James Robert Davis was born. Davis grew up with his father, James William “Jim” Davis, mother, Anna Catherine “Betty” Davis, and brother, Dave Davis, on a small Black Angus cow farm near Fairmount, Indiana. Davis grew up on a farm, just like Garfield’s owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was raised on a farm with his parents and brother, Doc Boy. Jon is a cartoonist with a July 28 birthday. Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in art and a master’s in business administration from Ball State University. He was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity during his time at Ball State.
Davis joined the staff of Fairmount High School’s newspaper The Breeze in 1962, eventually rising to the position of Art Editor. Davis’s first comic, allegedly inspired by school life, was first published here. Davis also created the majority of the illustrations for his senior yearbook in 1963, employing the same characters.
Davis was married twice, the first time to Carolyn Altekruse, who was allergic to cats[6] despite the fact that they had a dog named Molly. They’ve have a child together.Davis married Jill on July 16, 2000, after she had two children from a previous relationship. In the fall of 2006, Davis began lecturing on the creative and commercial aspects of the comics industry at Ball State University in Muncie as an adjunct professor.Davis runs his Paws, Inc. company in Albany, Indiana, where he and his employees create Garfield.
Garfield’s huge licencing, syndication, and entertainment empire is managed by Paws, Inc., which employs approximately 50 artists and licence administrators who work with agencies all over the world.Davis served as president of the FFA chapter in Fairmount, Indiana.Davis revealed in December 2019 that he would be auctioning off all hand-painted Garfield comics produced between 1978 and 2011 on a weekly basis. Davis began digitally drawing comics with a graphics tablet in 2011 and hasn’t looked back since. Davis had to figure out what to do with older comics, which were still sealed in a climate-controlled safe.
Davis worked for an advertising business before designing Garfield, and in 1969, he started aiding Tom Ryan’s Tumbleweeds comic strip. The Pendleton Times, a newspaper in Pendleton, Indiana, published Gnorm Gnat for three years (1973–1975). [11] “Your art is good, your ‘gags’ are ‘amazing,’ but bugs—nobody can relate to bugs!” an editor told Davis when he attempted to sell it to a national comic strip syndicate. He then began researching comic strips; still convinced that animals were amusing, he noted how Snoopy was not just a scene stealer in the Peanuts comic strips, but also a considerably greater marketing success than his owner Charlie Brown. He opted to make a cat character the main character of his next strip instead of a dog because the comic market was overrun with canines.
Davis subsequently began syndication in 41 newspapers on June 19, 1978, with a strip titled Jon in The Pendleton Times. It was syndicated in 2,580 newspapers as of 2008, with an estimated daily readership of 300 million people.
Davis’s barnyard comedy comic strip U.S. Acres was produced in the 1980s. The strip was dubbed Orson’s Farm outside the United States. Davis collaborated on a Mr. Potato Head-themed strip with Brett Koth from 2000 to 2003.To boost children’s literacy, Davis established the Professor Garfield Foundation.
Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois by Mort Walker, Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, Steve Canyon by Milton Caniff, and B.C. by Johnny Hart are some of his influences.ViacomCBS bought Jim Davis’ company, Paws, Inc., in 2019.
