Jericho Brown is a well-known American poet and author. He was born on April 14, 1976, in the United States. Brown was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and spent his childhood there. He received his education at the University of Houston, San Diego State University, and Emory University, among other prestigious universities.
His poetry has been published in various literary journals, including The Nation, The New England Review, The New Republic, Oxford American, and The New Yorker. In 2008, he published his debut book, Please, which included prose and poetry. In 2014, he published his second book, The New Testament. Brown eventually changed his name to Brown. In addition, he has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of New Orleans and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Houston. Brown has held the positions of teaching fellow in the English department at the University of Houston from 2002 to 2007, visiting professor in the Master of Fine Arts program at San Diego State University in the spring of 2009, and assistant professor in the English department at the University of San Diego.
In addition, he has been a lecturer at various conventions and seminars, such as the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, which was held at the University of Iowa. Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, is home to him, where he has the titles of associate professor of English and head of the Creative Writing Program. Before that, he was employed by the city of New Orleans as a speechwriter for the mayor.
Brown was honored with the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry in 2011. Jericho Brown, a poet and writer who has won the Pulitzer Prize, was one of the guests at the Morris Gray Poetry Reading on November 7 at the Harvard Department of English. Brown is the author of several collections of poetry, some of which he read, such as “Please,” “The New Testament,” and “The Tradition,” among others, which he has written.
Tracy K. Smith, a professor of English and African and African American studies at Harvard who helped arrange the event, introduced Brown’s work as a part of “many traditions,” one of which being the “Black lyric tradition.” Smith set the stage for the event in her introductory comments by describing the “Black lyric tradition.” Micaela N. Rosen ’23, a member of the audience, shared an admiration similar to that of the previous speaker for Brown’s link to the Black lyric tradition. She said Brown’s works were “very political” and “rooted in Blackness.”
“He just creates passionate poetry and has such a wonderful grasp of the language. One goal is to one day mimic at least some of his abilities. She said that he is “truly and simply an outstanding poet.” Jampel said that he was interested in hearing his poetry, notably his duplex, which is a form that he created “in his own words.”
Brown read many of his pieces from his various books, including a new poem inspired by the classic television program from the 1970s called “The Jeffersons,” as well as several passages from his book titled “The Tradition.” Mia A. Ward ’24, delighted to hear his duplex poetry, expressed her appreciation for “The Tradition,” adding that it significantly influenced a writer like herself and excited to hear his duplex poems.
The manner that Brown was “playing with form and creating his type of form” was something that Ward loved, and it was something that she hoped to bring into her work.
