Jason Iain Flemyng is a well-known English actor who was born on September 25th, 1966. In addition to his work in Hollywood productions such as Rob Roy, the Alan Moore comic book adaptations From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, he is best known for his roles in British films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, both of which were directed by Guy Ritchie. Both of these films were released in the year 1998. In addition to that, he has had notable appearances on stage and in television productions in the UK. Flemyng has a native command of the French language and has produced three films entirely in that tongue.
The character he played in the film Alive and Kicking in 1996 earned him the award for Best Actor at the Geneva Film Festival. Flemyng’s full name is Gordon Flemyng. After participating in the dramatic plays offered at his school, Christ’s Hospital in Sussex, he came to the conclusion that he wanted to pursue a career in acting. “I always wanted to be an actor,” he subsequently said in an interview with the BBC. “Ever since I saw our school version of The Wizard of Oz, I’ve had a thing for the girl who portrayed Dorothy in the play. I tried out for the part of the scarecrow so that I could spend the most time on stage with her, but she ended up choosing the tin man instead.
In the 1980s, he was active in a number of organizations, including the National Youth Theatre and the Young Socialists political organization. He also got engaged with Militant, which was an organization that was active inside the Labour Party. In 1987, he was kicked out of Labour for selling the Militant publication, which led to his being ejected. Subsequently, Flemyng has said that the only reason he participated in political and theatrical activities at this period of his life was to meet women.
He began his training as an actor in the year 1990 at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where Hermione Norris was one of his fellow students. After completing his studies at LAMDA and entering the workforce in the early 1990s, he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1992, he had a cameo appearance on the American television series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which is considered to be one of his first notable jobs in front of the camera. After that, he had a recurring role in the drama series Doctor Finlay, which aired on ITV from 1993 until 1996.
His debut in the film industry came in the form of a role in the 1994 adaptation of The Jungle Book. He made his debut in the film industry with the character of a child molester in Angela Pope’s drama Hollow Reed, which was released in 1996. This was followed by a leading role in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, which was released in 1998 and is considered one of the best gangster movies ever made. Flemyng subsequently claimed that he had to work on the four days of re-shoots that the picture required for free because he had lost so much money playing poker with the film’s investors in between takes on set. The film needed re-shoots for a number of scenes. After that, he went on to make appearances in movies including The Red Violin and Deep Rising, Snatch, George A. Romero’s Bruiser, and Rock Star. While he was working on Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, actor Jason Flemyng also appeared in the short film Feeling Good, which was written by Dexter Fletcher. Flemyng first met Fletcher on the set of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.
In the early 2000s, he appeared in two high-budget Hollywood films that were adaptations of Alan Moore’s comic books. These films were From Hell, starring Johnny Depp, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, starring Sean Connery, in which Flemyng portrayed Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde. Both of these films were adaptations of Alan Moore’s work. However, Flemyng said that “It was a bit of a nightmare… the film cost a fortune and didn’t make back the money it was meant to… it was a bit of a nightmare.” The latter film was a failure. But despite that, working on movies like that and From Hell is still a lot of fun for me. When you arrive on a set and famous actors like Sean Connery, Johnny Depp, or Brad Pitt are already there, you know it’s going to be a wonderful day.
In addition to his work in films, Flemyng has maintained a presence on television in a number of different roles. During an interview with BBC News Online in 2004, he said, “Of the 40 feature films I’ve made, 15 of them have never been seen by anyone outside of the cast and crew.” It is really disheartening when a movie that you have a lot of faith in gets ignored by audiences. Television doesn’t provide that kind of difficulty. You don’t want to paint a painting and then hide it away because you don’t want anyone to see it if you call yourself a painter. In 2005, he appeared in a live replica of the 1953 television series The Quatermass Experiment which was created by the digital television channel BBC Four. In this version, he portrayed the well-known science-fiction role of Professor Bernard Quatermass. In the 2005 film Transporter 2, he also portrayed the character of Dimitry, a Russian ex-biological weapons expert. This role brought him back together with Jason Statham for a short period of time.
In 2009, Flemyng joined the cast of the ITV science fiction cult drama series Primeval during its third season, playing the role of maverick ex-policeman Danny Quinn. Primeval is a part of the Primeval franchise. He was given top billing as the new star of the series, taking over for Douglas Henshall in that capacity. Flemyng was cast as the protagonist character, Cpl. Callow, in the action/horror movie The 4th Reich, which was released in March of 2010.
