Michael James Grier is the current general manager of the San Jose Sharks, who compete in the National Hockey League. He was born in the United States on January 5, 1975, and is a former ice hockey winger who played professionally. He has previous affiliations with the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League. His primary role was that of a checking forward, and he appeared in 1,060 games over the course of 14 seasons. He was the first African-American player in the history of the National Hockey League to train solely in the United States, and he was also the first black general manager in the history of the league.

Grier was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the ninth round in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. At the time of his selection, it was thought that he had a low chance of making it onto an NHL roster. In his early playing days, he was a part of Saint Sebastian’s School’s squad. Later, he played for Boston University, where he had his finest amateur season and was chosen to the first team all-star team. His best amateur season was in 1994–1995. While Grier was still a student at Boston University, the Edmonton Oilers acquired his NHL rights with the outstanding goalkeeper Curtis Joseph and two first-round draft selections in return for the package.
After graduating from college, Grier was immediately given a spot in the Oiler’s lineup as a checking-line right winger. In his first season with the team, he scored 32 points and maintained a plus-minus rating of a solid +7. The incident that brought Grier the most notoriety during his tenure in Edmonton occurred in 1997 and included Chris Simon of the Washington Capitals. Grier is accused of making insulting remarks about Simon’s Ojibwa ethnicity, and Simon is accused of responding with a racist slur aimed at Grier and striking him in the head with his stick. Both of these allegations are false. Simon was given a three-game suspension as a consequence of the incident in which he used his stick to attack Grier, even though the spoken remarks were never verified. Grier was a member of the Oilers organization for a total of six seasons and played in both of the seasons in which he scored twenty goals.
Grier was sent to the Washington Capitals on October 2, 2002, in exchange for a pair of draft picks in an effort to clear up roster space before the start of the next season. As a result of this, Grier and Simon ended up working together for a while on the same team. After participating in ten games during the 2002–03 season, Simon was included in a trade to Chicago. The Capitals endeavored to assemble a squad that was capable of winning the Stanley Cup, with the primary focus being placed on star forward Jaromir Jágr and goalkeeper Olaf Kolzig. On the ice, the club did not perform to expectations, while Grier continued to be a dependable checking player.
Grier’s ability to kill penalties was by far the most valuable contribution he made to both the Sharks and the Sabres. During his time with the Sharks, the penalty-killing unit he was a part of finished 14th, first, and fourth in the league, respectively. During the 2009–10 NHL season, Buffalo’s penalty-killing unit was ranked second overall in the league. Both of his clubs’ best penalty-killing units had him in their lineups. Following his retirement from playing hockey, Grier worked as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks and as an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils until being hired by the New York Rangers on May 19, 2021, in the capacity of hockey operations adviser.
Grier also coached at Saint Sebastian’s School, the same ice hockey program that he participated in during his high school years. Additionally, he coached the Boston Jr. Terriers 03 AAA club that his son played for. On November 3, 2010, while playing against the Boston Bruins, Grier played his 1,000th game in the National Hockey League. He was the 254th player in the history of the NHL to attain this milestone. Grier made the decision to retire from the National Hockey League on December 1, 2011, after learning that he would not be re-signed by Buffalo for the 2011–12 season.
This did not continue for very long since on March 4, 2004, the Washington Capitals transferred Grier to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for the Czech prospect Jakub Klepi. Grier played out the rest of the season with Buffalo, accumulating nine points, but the Sabres were eliminated from postseason contention. Grier established a personal record for himself by scoring four game-winning goals for the Sabres during the 2005–2006 NHL season.
These goals helped the Sabres go all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2006. After that, the San Jose Sharks made a deal with Grier to become a free agent, and in his first season with the team, he scored 16 goals, including three when the Sharks were playing with a man advantage. In the following two seasons that he played with the Sharks, he finished with nine and ten goals, respectively. On August 10, 2009, Grier signed a free-agency contract with the Buffalo Sabres and made his comeback to the team.
