James Alston Paxton is a Canadian professional baseball pitcher who now plays for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on November 6, 1988, and he goes by the moniker “The Big Maple.” His past teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) were the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners. Paxton spent his time playing baseball in college with the Kentucky Wildcats. The Mariners selected him in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2010, and he made his debut with the MLB for them in 2013.
Paxton became the first Canadian big league pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Canada on May 8, 2018, when he faced off against the Toronto Blue Jays and tossed a perfect game against them. Paxton was sent to the Yankees in a trade after the conclusion of the 2018 campaign. Paxton received his secondary education at Delta Secondary School in Ladner, which is located in British Columbia. Both for the North Delta Blue Jays of the British Columbia Premier Baseball League (PBL) and for Team Canada at the Junior National level, he was a member of the Canadian baseball team.
Paxton had a junior year in which he won 10 games, had an earned run average (ERA) of 1.51, and had 100 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched. In addition, he pitched a total of 100 innings. Because of this, he was recognized as the best pitcher in the PBL and selected to the first team of All-Stars. Paxton had an injury at the beginning of his senior year, but he still managed to finish the year with a win–loss record of 7–1, as well as 65 strikeouts and 32 walks in 50 innings pitched. Paxton and the Blue Jays were victorious both years, taking first place in their league and the B.C.’s Best Tournament.
Paxton attended the University of Kentucky after graduating from high school in 2006. While there, he was a member of the Kentucky Wildcats baseball team, which competed in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). He led the Wildcats in appearances as a freshman, recording 25 of them, and had a perfect record of 2-0 in relief, with one save. Paxton worked his way into the starting rotation midway through the 2008 season as a sophomore, earning 11 starts while making a total of 17 appearances for the team.
He finished the year with a record of 4–2 and a 2.92 earned run average. In the same year, Paxton pitched a complete-game shutout against Ole Miss, which earned him the title of SEC Pitcher of the Week. This victory allowed Paxton’s team to win the SEC Tournament. As a result of his injury, he was unable to take part in the NCAA Tournament. Paxton was invited to play collegiate summer baseball in the Alaska Baseball League that particular summer, and he accepted the invitation. There, he pitched in a total of 16 innings in four games, with a record of 1-0 and a 2.25 earned run average (ERA). He allowed opposing hitters to hit.179 batting average and struck out 12 batters in the process.
In 2009, Paxton started 13 games and finished with a record of 5–3 with 115 strikeouts in 78+1.3 innings, which was good for fifth-best in school history. Scouts from Major League Baseball took notice of him because they believed he had the potential to be selected in the first round of the draft. In the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, Paxton was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round, placing him 37th overall. However, he did not sign with the Blue Jays and instead chose to return to Kentucky for his senior season. As a result of his contract with agent Scott Boras, the NCAA subsequently declared that he was ineligible to play in college baseball.
During each of his four years at Kentucky, Paxton was recognized on the Southeastern Conference’s Academic Honor Roll. As an accounting major, he had a grade point average of 3.3 going into his final year of school.Paxton was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. This took place in June of that year. On March 4, 2011, he signed a contract with the Mariners.
Paxton participated in the 2011 season with the Southern League’s Single-A Clinton LumberKings as well as the Double-A Jackson Generals. Both of these teams are in the Southern League. He concluded the season with a win–loss record of 6–3, an earned run average of 2.37, 131 strikeouts, and 43 walks in 95 innings pitched, and he allowed a batting average of.215 to the opposition. Paxton and Alex Liddi were the two players who attended the All-Star Futures Game on behalf of the Mariners in 2011. Paxton was given the opportunity to participate in the main spring training camp that the Mariners had in 2012, but he was not selected for the opening day roster. He was assigned to serve with the Jackson Generals.
Paxton was a member of the Tacoma Rainiers, a team that competed in the Pacific Coast League’s Class AAA division in 2013. He focused on modifying his pitching mechanics with the assistance of the coaching staff for the Mariners in order to make them more similar to those of Clayton Kershaw, which led to an improvement in his effectiveness. Paxton made his debut in the main leagues on September 3, 2013, after being elevated to the level. On September 7, he made his debut appearance in the major leagues, and he began the game against the Tampa Bay Rays. As a result of his efforts, the Mariners were victorious by a score of 6–2. Paxton completed the season with a record of 3-0 after competing in 4 starts.
