She made her debut on Broadway in 1982 in the play Crimes of the Heart written by Beth Henley. She spent most of her career working in the theater. After that, she was nominated for a Tony Award in the category of Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in the play Our Country’s Good (1989) written by Timberlake Wertenbaker. She was also considered for the Outstanding Actress in a Play category of the Drama Desk Awards for her performance in Seán O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock (2014). She received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award in the category of Best Supporting Female for her performance in the movie Nancy (2018). 84 Charing Cross Road (1987).

Mighty Aphrodite (1995), Sabrina (1995), In & Out (1997), You Can Count on Me (2000), Margaret (2011), and Christine (2016) are some of her other significant films. In addition, she has had guest appearances in the television shows True Blood (2010–2011), Divorce (2016 2018), Search Party (2017–2020), and Fleishman Is in Trouble (2022). Greenville, which is located in South Carolina, was her childhood home.

She spent one year at Florida State University and was enrolled in the university’s School of Theatre. Then, she met film director Victor Nuez, who used her as a starring actress in the film he directed, Gal Young ‘Un (1979). In addition to that, she attended the HB Studio in New York City to study acting. The fact that her first name, Jeannie, was considered excessively girly led to her being credited as “J. Smith” while she was a student in college.

When she was notified by the Actors Equity Association that there was already a J. Smith and that there was a regulation that two actors could not have the same professional name, she decided to add a family name, Cameron. This rule stated that two actors could not have the same name in the acting profession. In August of 1982, she made her debut on Broadway by taking over for Mia Dillon in the role of Babe Botrelle in the play Crimes of the Heart. In 1989, she was a part of the first Lend Me a Tenor cast on Broadway, performing the role of Maggie.

The whole form of the production was honored with a Special Award from the Outer Critics Circle. She made her debut on Broadway in 1991 with the presentation of Our Country’s Good, for which she was considered a contender for the Tony Award in the category of Best Featured Actress. In addition to that, she has been on Broadway in the productions Night Must Fall (1999), Tartuffe (2002), and After the Night and the Music (2005).

She has been in several plays that have been performed Off-Broadway, including those that have taken place at the Public Theater, the Second Stage Theatre, and Playwrights Horizons. She had a role in the Paul Rudnick play The Naked Truth, which was performed off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre in 1994. She was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance in the play.

She was nominated for the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her performance as Clare in Fuddy Meers at New York City Center, Stage II, from November 1999 to April 2000. For her performance, she received the nomination. She had a role in the off-Broadway production of Sarah, Sarah, that the Manhattan Theatre Club put on from March through June 2004. In the play The Starry Messenger, written by her husband Kenneth Lonergan, she made her Off-Broadway debut at the Acorn Theatre in November 2009 and remained there until December.

She played the lead role of Juno Boyle in the Off-Broadway production of Juno and the Paycock at the Irish Repertory Theater from October 2013 through December 2013. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times wrote the following about Ms. Smith-Cameron’s performance as Juno: “In one of the finest performances of her distinguished career on the New York stage, Ms. Smith-Cameron imbues her Juno with a steely pragmatism, but more important an emotional pliancy that makes her more prepared than the rest of her clan to beat back the onslaughts of ill fortune that beset them.”

Later on, Smith-Cameron decided to prioritize her family by shifting her career toward more cinema and television parts. She appeared in all three central Law & Order franchise series, playing seven unique roles throughout those shows. In the Sundance TV show Rectify, she portrayed the role of Janet Talbot, the mother of a prisoner on death row, for all four seasons. On the HBO series Succession (2018–2023), she took on the part of attorney Gerri Kellman, scripted initially for a male character.

Her performance in the Off-Broadway Drama Department production of As Bees in Honey Drown (1997) got her not just a nomination for the Drama Desk Award but also a nomination for the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play. She went on to win the Obie Award. In addition, she was considered for an award from the Drama Desk for the play Sarah, Sarah (2004). Smith-Cameron is married to Kenneth Lonergan, who has worked as a playwright, screenwriter, and director in the film industry. They only have one child, and her name is Nellie.
