Actress Iman Vellani was born in Canada on August 12, 2002, and she is a native of that country. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022) and film The Marvels (2023), she is most recognized for playing the role of Kamala Khan. Vellani was reared in Canada as a Shia Ismaili Muslim even though she was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and migrated there when she was only one year old.
She received her diploma from Unionville High School in Markham, which is located in Ontario. At the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival edition, Vellani was chosen to serve on the TIFF Next Wave Committee. Vellani had every intention of majoring in integrated media at the Ontario College of Art and Design University after finishing her senior year of high school if she had yet to be cast as Ms. Marvel after that year.
In September 2020, it was announced that Vellani was cast as the role of the Marvel Cinematic Universe character Kamala Khan for the streaming television miniseries Ms. Marvel that Marvel Studios and Disney+ would produce. Vellani’s aunt had given her a casting call for the job, she had submitted a self-tape before being requested to audition in Los Angeles, and she finally had two screen tests: one in-person screen test in February of that year, as well as a virtual one via Zoom in June of that year.
The co-creator of Kamala Khan, Sana Amanat, who also worked as an executive producer on the series, said that Vellani disclosed in her Zoom screen test that she, like Khan, is a massive admirer of the superhero team the Avengers. “She showed me every corner of her room, and it was covered with Avengers,” Amanat added. Then she exclaimed, “Oh wait; I’m not done,” opened her closet door, and found even more Marvel merchandise everywhere.
In June of 2022, Vellani appeared in the documentary short titled “A Fan’s Guide to Ms. Marvel,” which was about the making of the series. It was made available on Disney+ before the launch of Ms. Marvel and included interviews with her as well as the members of the production crew. Ms. Marvel debuted on Disney+ on June 8, 2022, marking Vellani’s first appearance in front of the camera.
The series and her performance as the main character have garnered a lot of positive feedback. Vellani was praised for her performance in the role by Kathryn Porter of Paste, who said that she “shines” in the part and that there is “no way to explain how great she is in this other than to say that she embodies the true spirit of Kamala Khan.” Her part was “tailor-made for her,” according to Mohammad Zaheer of BBC Culture, who referred to her as “an adorable bundle of charisma.”
Despite this, Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter praised Vellani’s performance, saying she brought “youthful verve and irresistible moxie” to the part. The conclusion of the miniseries took place on July 13, 2022, and it had six episodes. Vellani reprised her role as Khan in Disney Wish’s computer-generated-imagery (CGI) immersive interactive experience, Avengers: Quantum Encounter, released in July.
The Making of Ms. Marvel is a unique documentary focusing on conceptualizing and making the series. It included on-set interviews with Vellani, cast members, and creatives. The following month, she made an appearance in the special. As the tenth and last episode of the anthology docuseries titled Marvel Studios: Assembled, the special was made available for streaming on Disney+.
Vellani made her debut as a comic book writer in August 2023 with the limited series Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant, which consisted of four issues and was co-authored by Sabir Pirzada, who had previously written the limited series Dark Web: Ms. Marvel as well as episodes of the Ms. Marvel television program. Ms. Marvel will investigate her newly discovered dual background as an Inhuman and a mutant while joining the X-Men for the first time in this story arc.
According to the writer, Vellani’s “robust love and passion” for Kamala Khan “shines throughout her writing.” Lia Williamson of AIPT praised Vellani’s handling of the character’s new status quo, stating, “[her] knowledge and love for the character allow her to make lemonade out of the lemons she’s been given.”
In the 2023 film The Marvels, which is a sequel to the 2019 film Captain Marvel and also serves as a continuation of Ms. Marvel, the latter film was released in November of that year, and Villani played the character of Kamala Khan once again. The movie was met with mixed reviews from reviewers, but Vellani’s turn was singled out by many viewers as the performance that elevated her above the rest of the ensemble.
Despite his lackluster assessment of the film, Christian Holub of Entertainment Weekly called Vellani a “shining star”. Amelia Emberwing of IGN said she “predictably steals the show.” Helen O’Hara of Empire appreciated Vellani’s comedy and emotional depth with the “two older heroes.”
It’s a pity that Nia DaCosta’s “The Marvels” could not attract mainstream viewers because, despite the film’s problems, they’re losing out on a star-making performance from Iman Vellani. Vellani completely overshadows Brie Larson’s portrayal as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and takes the spotlight away from Larson.
Vellani’s creativity won’t surprise those following the several offshoot episodes that Disney+ has produced based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She seamlessly transferred her charm to the big screen, demonstrating that she could carry the series throughout its first (and likely only) production season. She will be unbeatable even though she is just 21 years old.
