In full, Gregory Alan Maddux (born April 14, 1966 in San Angelo, Texas, U.S.), an American professional baseball player who was recognized for his accuracy and his ability to read opponents. He was the first pitcher in Cy Young Award history to win the award four times in a row (1992–95).
He taught Maddux the foundations of the game from an early age, along with his older brother Mike, who also became a major league pitcher. After graduating from Valley High School in Las Vegas in 1984 and being drafted by the Chicago Cubs of the National League (NL), Greg was assigned to the Cubs’ minor league system.
Maddux, a 20-year-old rookie, was called up to the major leagues at the end of the 1986 season. He compiled a 19–12 record with a 2.95 ERA as the Cubs’ starting pitcher in 1989, when they won the Eastern Division title.
He won 30 games and lost 26 in the following two seasons, both as a starter for losing teams. Maddux earned his first Cy Young Award in 1992 with a 20–11 record and a 2.18 ERA. When it came to batters, his only weapons were his mind and the extraordinary accuracy and speed variation of his pitches. He didn’t have the most destructive fastball or curve in the game, but that didn’t stop him from dominating hitters.
After the 1992 season, he signed a five-year, $28 million contract with the Atlanta Braves after a contract disagreement with the Cubs. He won the Cy Young Award each year during his first three seasons with the Braves, compiling a 55-18 record. In 1995, Maddux led the Braves to a World Series championship by winning a league-best 19 games and losing just two. It took him two seasons to become the first pitcher since Walter (“Big Train”) Johnson in 1918–19 to have a two-year ERA under 1.80, and he was the league leader in both 1994 and 1995.
On July 26, 2005, he became the 13th pitcher to record 3,000 strikeouts. He was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 and signed with the San Diego Padres the following year. A record-setting 17th Gold Glove Award was won by Maddux in 2007, followed by an 18th the following year.
Following his mid-season return to Los Angeles, Maddux became the ninth pitcher in MLB history to win 350 games in 2008. After his retirement in 2008, he was the second-most successful pitcher in baseball’s “live-ball era” with 355 victories (the period that dates from the introduction of hitter-friendly rules in 1920).
