After that, he made the switch to the University of Arizona, where he eventually earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in the year 1965. After working a variety of occupations that included being a garment salesman and a short-order chef, Rivera eventually enrolled in the Brooklyn Law School in 1966.
Before graduating near the top of his class with a J.D. in 1969, he completed his legal education by working as an intern for the New York County District Attorney’s office under the leadership of crime fighter Frank Hogan and for Harlem Assertion of Rights, a community-based organization that provides legal services. After that, during the summer of 1969, he participated in the Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship in Poverty Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Later that year, he was accepted into the New York State Bar Association.
Rivera became a frequent attorney for the New York City chapter of the Young Lords, a Puerto Rican activist group, based in East Harlem after working for organizations such as Community Action for Legal Services and the National Lawyers Guild, both of which are located in lower Manhattan. This eventually led to Rivera’s entry into private practice. Before that, Rivera worked for organizations such as these.
When Rivera was being interviewed about the group’s occupation of a neighborhood church in 1969, this work caught the attention of WABC-TV news director Al Primo.
