Grammy winner Francesca Battistelli got her start at age 15 by writing and performing her own songs. Her Billboard-charting singles combine genres as diverse as soul, alternative rock, gospel, and mainstream pop. She had a solid foundation in music, dance, and theater because of her early education in these areas. Her debut album, “Just a Breath,” was released in 2004 when she was still a teenager.
Due in large part to the success of the single “Free to Be Me,” her second studio album, My Paper Heart, topped the Billboard Christian Albums chart in 2008. By 2014, Battistelli had broken through to the public with her singing; her fifth studio album, If We’re Honest, peaked at number ten on the Billboard 200 and included the gold-certified hit “He Knows My Name” and the Grammy Award-winning track “Holy Spirit.” Battistelli had also been awarded a Grammy for her rendition of “Holy Spirit.”
Following a two-year hiatus from the Billboard holiday albums chart, she returned in 2020 with her second-holiday album, This Christmas. God’s Not Dead: We the People’s album had a song titled “God Is Good,” which was released in 2021. At the tender age of six, New York native Battistelli saw a production of “The Secret Garden” on Broadway. She left the performance thinking that she might like to try acting.
Both of her parents had vast expertise in the performing arts, and they encouraged her to take up acting and dance. By the time she was 15, Battistelli had landed a spot in Bella, an Orlando-based teen pop group. After the group broke up, she got involved with a youth ministry and started listening to Christian pop.
The future Dove Award winner taught herself guitar in the beginning, and that helped her get started in songwriting. Battistelli’s album Just a Breath was released in 2004 on his own indie label. Her first album, an EP in 2008 titled I’m Letting Go, came out on the contemporary Christian label Fervent Records.
Later that year, her full-length first album, My Paper Heart, was released by the record label. The album debuted in the top 40 on the Billboard 200 and produced the Christian #1 song “Free to Be Me.” The subsequent single, titled “It’s Your Life,” was able to crack the Top 100 on the Hot 100 list, reaching #95.
At the 2010 Dove Awards, she took home the trophy for Female Vocalist of the Year. Battistelli’s third album, Hundred More Years, was again a huge commercial success, entering the charts in 2011 at position number 16 on the Billboard 200 while also topping the Christian albums chart. She repeated as Female Vocalist of the Year Dove Award winner, taking home the trophy for the second year running.
In 2017, with the release of Greatest Hits: The First Ten Years, Battistelli made a triumphant return to the Christian music charts with the single “The Breakup Song” from Own It, her sixth studio album. Her new album debuted in the top five on the Billboard chart for Christian albums for the sixth time in a row. This Christmas, her second Christmas album, peaked at number 12 on the holiday albums chart when it was published in 2020. We the People’s “God Is Good,” a song written for the God’s Not Dead film episode, was released in 2021.
Francesca Battistelli is at ease when singing for a crowd. She had parents who worked in the arts and on Broadway, so it was only natural that she develop a love for the stage at a young age. Instead of using her talents to attract attention to herself, Francesca would rather have others focus on the salvation that is found in Christ. Her eclectic musical preferences range from jazz and rock to gospel and R&B, all of which can be heard in her soulful take on the piano-pop genre. Concepts of trust and taking chances are skillfully interwoven with these genres.
An unwavering voice, unafraid to speak the truth and guide an entire generation, is desperately needed in our noisy, visually stimulating, and otherwise chaotic world. Francesca Battistelli, a singer, and composer, is the one who has that voice. When Battistelli’s first album, My Paper Heart, was released, she was already married to Matthew Goodwin, the percussionist for a Christian band, and expecting their first child, Matthew Elijah. This happened between the release of her second album, Hundred More Years.
Battistelli named her second album “Hundred More Years” after the song of the same name because its storyline—a young couple meeting and falling in love, then having their first child—was so similar to her own. Hundred More Years was released to the public on March 1, 2011. The appropriate means of contacting Francesca Battistelli is detailed below.
