FKA twigs Bio

FKA Twigs was born on January 17, 1988, in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. At the age of seventeen, she uprooted to South London to pursue a career as a backup dancer. Her first EP, released in 2012, was followed by EP2 the following year. In 2014, she released her debut studio album, titled LP1, which quickly became famous, peaking at #16 on the U.K. Albums Chart and #30 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Her newest album, “Caprisongs,” was released in 2022. Let’s learn more about this incredible musician.

Both her mother and father were musicians; her mother was from England and her father was from Jamaica. She was reared by her mother and stepfather, a jazz fanatic until she was 18 years old when she finally got to meet her biological father. Her unusually loud bone-cracking gave her the moniker “Twigs” at a young age. At 13, she joined a jazz band and attended a Catholic high school for girls on a full scholarship. She was the only student of mixed race at her school, and her feelings of alienation prompted her to start writing songs in the style of the great Jazz and soul performers of the era. It’s possible that the post-punk and new wave-influenced her as well.

Barnett left for London to pursue a career in dancing when she was 17 years old. She discovered her true calling was in music after participating in a few videos. Along with her pals CY AN and LJ Howe, she started the punk band Delirium Tremens. She held down a dual career as a bartender and musician. One of the producers her band management put her in touch with was Mike Chapman, who was instrumental in helping her hone her songwriting skills. In 2012, she released “EP1,” which featured music videos she had produced and filmed herself.

After her breakthrough with “EP1,” Barnett was asked to change her name by her identical twin sisters who had been performing under the name Twigs for nearly two decades. In 2013, as FKA Twigs, she released her second extended play. That same year, she received a nomination for the B.B.C.’s Sound of 2014 award. Barnett’s first song, “Two Weeks,” was published in June 2014, setting the stage for the arrival of her debut album, LP1. Together with Paul Epworth, Dev Hynes, Arca, and Sampha, she helped produce their tracks for the album. Many praised the album, and it was nominated for a Grammy for best recording package.

Prior to the release of her second album, she utilized her skills in filming and dancing. She debuted the Google Glass advertising film “#throughglass” in October of 2014. The film, which contained a few of her songs, was directed by her. She gave an interpretive dance performance titled “Congregata” in 2015. She took cues and lifted entire tracks from her own album “LP1.” M3LL155X (“Melissa”) E.P., which she released in August of that year, comprised a number of tracks on which she had worked with producer Boots. On the Billboard 200, the EP peaked at position #63. She maintained her musical career after 2015 with the release of albums including 2019’s “Magdalene.” Other artists, including A$AP Rocky and 645AR, have worked with her as well.

Her first film, 2019’s “Honey Boy,” also marked her acting debut. She proved she is one of the most accomplished singers of her generation with 2019’s “Magdalene” and 2022’s “Caprisongs,” a lighter mixtape. Tahliah Barnett, better known by her stage name FKA Twigs, combines her various talents as a singer, songwriter, producer, dancer, and filmmaker to create art and music that transcends categories in favor of emotional impact. Years of classical training have given her a deceptively delicate, multi-octave voice that she pairs with heavy beats that draw from experimental electronic music, industrial, and the futuristic side of R&B, as well as melodies that sound like they were inherited from the songbooks of Kate Bush and Janet Jackson.

FKA twigs’ music, however, is bigger than the sum of its parts, and much of the plaudits that greeted her earliest releases, such as the EP2 in 2013 and the Mercury Prize-nominated full-length LP1 the following year, praised its robust yet delicate nature. Barnett kept breaking new ground over the years, proving she was one of the most accomplished artists of her generation with 2019’s introspective follow-up album Magdalene and 2022’s more lighthearted collaborations on the mixtape Caprisongs.

Barnett is a half-Jamaican Englishwoman who grew up in the countryside with the support of her mother, a Spanish-English salsa dancer. Her ability to snap her bones so loudly earned her the moniker “Twigs,” and at age 13 she began performing with a jazz band. She was the sole student of mixed race at her private Catholic high school, which she attended on a scholarship. Barnett began seriously writing music at the age of 16, drawing influence from artists as diverse as the traditional jazz and soul of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and the new wave of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Adam Ant.

A pair of twin sisters named Twigs who had been working under that name for nearly two decades requested that she change her identity, and thus in September 2013, she reappeared with EP2, a striking compilation of tracks featuring production by Arca. FKA twigs were eventually considered for the BBC’s Sound of 2014 award later that year. EP2 came out in the United States in May 2014. In June of the same year, FKA Twigs’ debut album, LP1, was announced with the more extravagant “Two Weeks” single.

Barnett collaborated with Arca, Dev Hynes, Sampha, and Paul Epworth on the album, and she also did more of the album’s production work. After its August 2014 release, LP1 was nominated for both the Mercury Prize and the Grammy for Best Recording Package. The album also did well commercially, debuting at number 16 on the U.K. Albums Chart and at number 30 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart in the U.S.
