Fiona Shaw Bio

Born Fiona Mary Wilson on 10 July 1958, Fiona Shaw CBE is an Irish actress who has worked in both film and theater. Well-known for considerable work in film and television, as well as with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. On the list of Ireland’s greatest film performers compiled by The Irish Times in the year 2020, she was ranked number 29. In 2001, Queen Elizabeth II honored her by bestowing upon her the title of Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

She played leading parts in the plays Electra, As You Like It, The Good Person of Szechwan (1990), and Machinal (1994), which helped her earn the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in 1990. She was considered for an Olivier Award for the roles that she played in the productions of Mephisto (1986), Hedda Gabler (1992), and Happy Days (2008). She made her debut on Broadway in the title role of Medea in 2002, for which she received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.

In addition, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2003. She made her comeback to Broadway in the 2013 production of the Colm Tobin drama The Testament of Mary. She is best known for her role as Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter film series, which ran from 2001 to 2010. Other prominent film roles include those in My Left Foot (1989), Persuasion (1995), Jane Eyre (1996), The Tree of Life (2011), Colette (2018), Ammonite (2020), and Enola Holmes (2020). All of these films were released between 1989 and 1996.

Her television performances include Marnie Stonebrook in the HBO series True Blood (2011) and Hedda Hopper in the HBO feature RKO 281 (1999). Both of these roles were produced by HBO. She was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and won the 2019 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Carolyn Martens on the British television series Killing Eve (2018–22), for which she also got the 2019 BAFTA TV Award.

She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in Fleabag (2019), in which she played the part of a Counselor. Both the BBC One series Baptiste (2021) and the Disney+ series Andor (2022) featured her as a main cast member. the daughter of physicist Mary T. (Flynn) Wilson and ophthalmic surgeon Denis Joseph Wilson (1922–2011), who married in 1952.  Mary T. (Flynn) Wilson was a pioneer in the field of flynn theory.

They continued to own a residence in Montenotte. She obtained her degree in philosophy from University College Cork, where she also completed her secondary education at Scoil Mhuire, also located in Cork. Shaw attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, where he received his Acting (RADA Diploma) in 1982 after completing his studies.

In the performance of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The Rivals (1983) that was staged at the National Theatre in 1983, she played the role of Julia. Her acting credits include Celia in “As You Like It” (1984), Madame de Volanges in “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” (1985), Katherine in “The Taming of the Shrew” (1987), Lady Franjul in “The New Inn” (1987), and Young Woman in “Macinal” (1993). For the latter part, she was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress.

Shaw is best known for his performance as the male lead in the 1995 play Richard II, which was directed by Deborah Warner. In 1996, she gave a performance of the poem “The Waste Land” by T. S. Eliot as a one-person show at the Liberty Theatre in New York City. The production was met with widespread acclaim, and she was awarded the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding One-Person Show for her work.

Winnie in the film Happy Days (2007), as well as the title roles in Electra (1988), The Good Person of Szechuan (1989), Hedda Gabler (1991), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1998), and Medea (2000). Winnie also appeared in Happy Days (2007). In 2009, Shaw worked with Deborah Warner once more and took the main part in Tony Kushner’s adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children.

The play was originally written by Brecht. Rupert Christiansen wrote a piece in 2002 for The Daily Telegraph in which he referred to their working relationship as “surely one of the most richly creative partnerships in theatrical history.” Other works produced by the two ladies together include Brecht’s The Good Woman of Szechuan and Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, the latter of which was adapted for the small screen.

During the year 2010, Shaw was seen in productions of The Waste Land at Wilton’s Music Hall and a reprise of London Assurance at the National Theatre. Shaw, Alan Rickman, and Lindsay Duncan were the other cast members of Ibsen’s John Gabriel Borkman, which was performed at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in November of 2010. In 2011, a production of the play was also produced at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

Shaw had an appearance in the production of Scenes from an Execution by Howard Barker at the National Theatre in the year 2012. Her performance in The Testament of Mary on Broadway was deemed worthy of the 2013 United Solo Special Award, which was bestowed upon her by United Solo, the largest solo theatrical festival in the world.

Shaw made her acting debut in the television episode of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes titled “The Adventure of the Crooked Man” in 1984. Since then, she has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including “My Left Foot” (1989), “Mountains of the Moon” (1990), “Three Men and a Little Lady” (1990), “Super Mario Bros.” (1993), “Undercover Blues” (1993), “Persuasion” (1995), ” Shaw has a small but significant part in the film The Black Dahlia (2006), which was directed by Brian DePalma.

In the fourth season of the American television show True Blood, Shaw made an appearance. It has been said that Marnie Stonebrook, one of Shaw’s characters, is a palm reader who isn’t very good at her job and who is actually possessed by an actual witch. In 2018, Shaw began playing the role of Carolyn Martens, the chief of the Russia-focused department of MI6, on the television show Killing Eve, which airs on BBC America.

She was awarded the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Television Series for her performance, which earned her the award. In the latter part of the same year, she had a role in the film Mrs. Wilson as a senior MI6 officer. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for the role of Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in the Phoebe Waller-Bridge series Fleabag (2019), in which she played the part of a Counselor.
