Ferry Corsten was born on 4 December 1973. One of the most prolific and commercially successful trance artists, Dutch DJ/producer Ferry Corsten has been active since the early ’90s. The euphoric, melodically rich trance sound that was so popular in the late ’90s and early ’00s was heavily influenced by his biggest songs, and his music has continued to grow over the years, incorporating elements of electro, pop, and even hip-hop. Corsten has released music under a wide variety of aliases, including System F and Gouryella, with the former garnering more attention and success. The bulk of his work, however, has been issued under his real name since the mid-2000s.
On labels including Ultra, Ministry of Sound, and Moonshine, he has released hundreds of DJ mix CDs, including multiple volumes in the Trance Nation and Once Upon a Night series. A frequent performer at international dance music festivals including Electric Daisy Carnival and Tomorrowland, his travels have taken him to practically every continent. He is a frequent fixture on DJ Magazine’s annual Top 100 DJs poll, for which he has either won or been nominated for a number of accolades. Corsten runs the record label Flashover Recordings and the widely listened-to radio program Corsten’s Countdown.
Ferry Corsten, who was born in Rotterdam in 1973, has been a DJ and music producer since he was a teenager. In 1991, Corsten produced a techno EP with his friends John Matze, René de Ruyter, and Robert Smit under the moniker Spirit of Adventure. The group eventually became known as the Tellurians, and their sound hardened and darkened to match the rising intensity of the local techno scene. Under aliases like Free Inside and A Jolly Good Fellow, he kept making techno, acid, house, and hardcore music throughout the decade.
He won the dance category of the renowned Dutch music award De Grote Prijs van Nederland in 1995 when he was just 21 years old. Under the alias Ferr, he released his first full-length album, Looking Forward, in 1996. The album, released on the Nutrition label, featured a wide variety of musical styles, from Detroit-influenced techno to drum N bass and downtempo.
Also known as DJ Sno-White, he is responsible for the holiday parody CD Santa’s X-Mas Dance Party. Corsten had his first charting song in the United Kingdom with “Don’t Be Afraid” in 1996. He kept cranking out tracks, and in 1997, “I’m in Love,” an upbeat trance cut he co-produced with frequent partner Smit as Starparty, became a massive smash. As part of the Dutch dance firm Purple Eye Entertainment, the two also founded a label called Tsunami.
Under his Albion alias, Corsten released the song “Air” in 1998 on the influential trance label Platipus. The pleasant, calming tune was remixed multiple times and became a favorite of DJs like John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold. In 1999, when trance was reigning both on dancefloors and in the pop charts, Corsten’s fame skyrocketed. His debut System F single, the anthem “Out of the Blue,” was released in February and became a big hit, peaking in the Top 20 of the U.K. singles chart.
He has also had hits in collaboration with Tisto and Vincent de Moor. For Tisto’s Black Hole Recordings, he released the first volumes of Trance Nation and Artist Profile Series 1: Solar Serenades, as well as his first mix of CDs. Muzik Magazine selected Corsten as their Producer of the Year, and he also won the Zilveren Harp, a Dutch music award.
Corsten continued to use the Gouryella moniker after Tisto acknowledged at the end of 2001 that he had departed the project, releasing “Ligaya” the following year. In the same year, Corsten also had success with his own name on the charts with the tune “Punk,” which leaned toward electroclash.
Together, System F’s second studio album was released by Japanese record company Avex Trax in the early part of 2003. In late 2003, Corsten released Right of Way, his debut album under his sole production credit. The album, which featured the popular single “Punk” and the even more successful “Rock Your Body Rock,” peaked in the top ten in the United Kingdom. In 2004, the Ministry of Sound released Infinite Euphoria, another mix CD and collection from Corsten. Corsten also marked the Dance Valley festival’s tenth anniversary with the publication of a double-CD mix. After parting ways with Tsunami Records in 2005, Corsten launched Flashover Recordings.
His debut release on the label, 2006’s L.E.F., was a varied effort that featured cameos from Guru of Gang Starr, Howard Jones, and Simon LeBon of Duran Duran. Because of the eclectic sound of this album, one website crowned Corsten “King of Crossover.” The inaugural Full on Ferry event was held at Rotterdam’s Ahoy Stadium in 2007, the same year that Corsten launched his successful radio show Corsten’s Countdown. He also produced a new version of the Public Enemy classic “Bring the Noise,” expanding his audience even further.
After getting married and having a child, Corsten released Twice in a Blue Moon in 2008, a more introspective and less dancefloor-ready record. After Corsten’s worldwide Twice in a Blue Moon: The Experience tour in 2009, he released a remix album. In 2010, Corsten laid down a set for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix. As well as launching a new mix CD series titled Once Upon a Night, he released Champions, a System F remix album. Corsten’s 2012 album WKND featured collaborations with Aruna, Betsie Larkin, and van Buuren, and it followed a period of intensive traveling.
In addition to his weekly Corsten’s Countdown mix show, he also started a monthly mix show called Ferry’s Fix. New World Punx was created in 2013 by Corsten and Markus Schulz, who released their first track, “Romper.” Corsten dropped the Hello World EP series in 2015, with the intent of compiling them into a full-length album. He also began a globe tour as Gouryella and dropped a new tune, “Anahera,” which quickly became the year’s most popular trance song.
In 2016, Gouryella released the single “Neba” and the album From the Heavens, both of which featured reworked versions of their earlier songs. In the early months of 2017, Melbourne, Australia played host to the debut of a documentary about Gouryella named, similarly, From the Heavens. A few months later in May, the first single from Corsten’s Blueprint album, “Venera” by Gouryella, was released.
