Fally Ipupa Bio

Fally Ipupa N’simba was born on December 14, 1977,. He was a member of Quartier Latin International, a band founded in 1986 by Koffi Olomidé, from 1999 until 2006. His debut solo album, 2006’s Droit Chemin, sold over 100,000 copies, and his second, 2009’s Arsenal de Belles Melodies, was critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

Ipupa took up the trophy for Central Africa’s Best Artist or Group at the 2007 Kora Awards. Fally Ipupa was named Best Francophone Artist and Best Video at the 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards. He was named best African artist at the urban music awards. At the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards, Ipupa was nominated for Best Live Act. In 2013, he dropped an album titled Power koa leka. The bilingual love ballad “Chaise Electrique,” which features former G-Unit vocalist Olivia, helped Ipupa, a renowned guitarist, connect with listeners in the United States.

A pivotal encounter in the late ’90s, when he joined Quartier Latin International, was the start of his meteoric rise in the music industry, guided by Koffi Olomide. The role of “conductor of the orchestra” was given to Ipupa. Ipupa released “Eternelement,” a piece of his, on the album Force de Frappe.

In 2001, he and Koffi Olomide released a duet titled “Effervescent” on the Effrakata album. Like many other Congolese stars, he rapidly earned the monikers “Di Caprio,” “Anelka,” and “The Great One” from his adoring fans. In addition to his work with the orchestra, he also pursued a successful solo career, releasing the albums Droit Chemin and Danger De Mort. Although leaving the band in 2006, he has been actively involved in organizing the 30th-anniversary celebration.

David Monsoh Obouo of Music produced his debut solo album, Droit Chemin, in 2006. Songs like Liputa, Orgasy, and Sopeka, which are popular in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and elsewhere in Africa, were produced in collaboration with Maddy Munan, Krys, Mokobé of 113, and Ben J of Neg ‘Marrons. He was awarded a gold disc, signifying sales of over 100,000 copies, attesting to the album’s success.

In addition to being nominated for a Grammy and winning two Black Music Awards for Male Artist of the Year, Fally was also named Césaire Music Male Artist of the Gear in Paris, Best Clip in Benin, and Male Artist of the Year in Ivory Coast. He was shortlisted for best artist in Central Africa at the Kora Awards and “Best Soukous Performer” at the IRAMWA Awards in the United States. There he launched what would become a fruitful solo career of performing and lecturing.

The artist’s Paris Olympia performance took place on April 7, 2007. Ipupa followed up their 2013 album Droit Chemin with a 16-track effort titled Arsenal De Belles Melodies, or “A2BM” for short. It was David Monsoh’s second time producing an album for Ipupa.  Ipupa became one of Africa’s most in-demand musicians after working with Olivia, a vocalist with a sizable following on the continent.

Around one hundred thousand copies of this album were sold, a record for a Congolese musician; forty thousand of those copies were sold in just one week. On May 16th, 2009, at an event called “Creole Night” hosted by the collective Kassav, Fally performs an emotional set that sets the Stadium de France ablaze with 90,000 people. The band “LamusiK” was also included during the event. Young Star was a collaborative effort between Fally and “LamusiK.” On January 2, 2010, more than 6,000 people showed up to hear Fally perform at the Zenith de Paris.

He has won numerous trophies, such as 3 Ndule Awards 2010, “Micro Gold”, and “Best Artist Central Africa” in the Soundcity Music Video He has also received a number of nominations, including at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards and the 2011 BET Awards.

Bigg Masta G and Ipupa worked together on the “Ndoki” remix. Ipupa’s original vocals were edited out of the remix, and Bigg Masta G’s raps were inserted in their place. Between Ipupa and Bigg Masta G on the official remix cover is the word “Ndoki,” creating a dramatic and exciting image. Another version of the song was remixed by Congolese Rumba singer MJ30, Poison Mobutu, and Mami Wata. Instead of Fally Ipupa singing the chorus, MJ30 sings it in her own remix.

More than 150,000 people have watched the music video for “Ndoki” on YouTube in just over a week. With over 30,000 copies sold in just one month, his third album was considered a smashing success. On May 14th, 2013 at the first Trace Urban Music Awards, Fally took home the prize for Best African Artist.
