Known by his moniker “Butterbean,” Eric David Scott Esch is an American former professional boxer, kickboxer, mixed martial artist, and professional wrestler who fought in the heavyweight class. He was born on August 3, 1966, and his nickname is “Butterbean.” As a whole, he has won the World Championship four times. Moreover, he is a well-known figure on television.
After a successful run on the Toughman Contest stage, Esch made the transition to the professional boxing scene in 1994. He went on to win the heavyweight title of the World Athletic Association (WAA) and the super heavyweight championship of the International Boxing Association (IBA). Beginning in the year 2003, he competed consistently as a kickboxer and mixed martial artist, most notably in the K-1 and Pride Fighting Championships programs. Throughout his career, Esch has compiled a record of 97–24–5, including 65 knockouts and 9 submits.
While he was working at the Southern Energy Homes facility in Addison, Alabama, decking flooring for prefabricated homes, his coworkers challenged him to compete in a local Toughman Contest. The competition would take place in Bay City, Michigan, and he would get training there. After winning the competition, he launched his career in the world of combat sports. At the beginning of the 1990s, Esch started his career as a fighter by competing in the Toughman Contest in Texarkana, Arkansas. He went on to become a five-time World Toughman Heavyweight Champion, with a record of 56–5 with 36 knockouts.
The new age trainer Prozay Buell, also known as “the better Buell,” gave him the moniker “Butterbean” because he was required to go on a diet that consisted mostly of chicken and butterbeans to achieve the weight restriction for the Toughman competition, which was 400 pounds (181 kilograms).On October 15, 1994, he made his debut on the professional boxing circuit by defeating Tim Daniels in a decision fight that took place in Birmingham, Alabama. Soon after, he became known as “King of the 4 Rounders” on account of the cult following that he quickly built.
Esch had a streak of victories, most of which were achieved by knockouts, until Mitchell Rose, who had been brought in as a last-minute substitute, stopped him in two rounds on December 15, 1995. Later on, Rose would assert that representatives from Top Rank Boxing contacted him the night before the bout and offered him five thousand dollars to throw the contest. Rose would say that this transaction took place.
After that, Esch would go on to win or draw his last 51 matches, even though a number of his victories and draws by decision turned out to be very contentious. In that period, his victory against Peter McNeeley stands out as the most noteworthy. According to the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF), and World Boxing Organization (WBO), Esch has never been victorious against a heavyweight contender who is a current contender.
However, in 1997, his promoter Bob Arum was successful in persuading the International Boxing Association (IBA) to establish a title that was particularly designed for Esch. This belt was named “The IBA Super Heavyweight Championship…” The following is an excerpt from an interview that Bob Arum gave to the Los Angeles Times in the year 1999: “I came up with the idea to make him ‘King of the Four-Rounders,’ and I got (IBA commissioner) Dean Chance to give him a belt as a champion of the nonexistent super heavyweight division.”
Esch would sometimes defend the championship on the undercards of major main events. He would do this on occasion. Before he finally lost the championship in the year 2000, he successfully defended it six times. In the latter part of the same year, the World Athletic Association (WAA), which is not very well-known, momentarily awarded him their vacant Heavyweight Title using the same advertising strategy. However, Butterbean never formally defended the title.
A majority decision loss to heavyweight Billy Zumbrun in August 2001 puts an end to Esch’s five-year winning streak. Zumbrun was the opponent. The next year, on July 27, he competed in his first ten-round fight against Larry Holmes, a former world heavyweight champion who was fifty-two years old. The fight took place at the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk, Virginia.
Esch was credited with a contentious knockdown in the last round, which was subsequently revealed in video replays as not being a knockdown, no blow having landed, and it was a slip; Holmes just reeled against the ropes. Even though Holmes won the fight by unanimous decision, Esch was credited with the knockdown. Throughout a career that included 109 fights, this was one of just three bouts that were planned to go for more than four rounds.
Following his recruitment by K-1 in 2003, Esch made his debut in the sport of kickboxing by knocking out Yusuke Fujimoto in the first round of their fight at K-1 Beast II 2003, which took place in Saitama, Japan, on June 29, 2003. At that time, K-1 was eager to offer him a battle against Ernesto Hoost; however, he chose not to accept the fight on the recommendation of a friend who cautioned him about the Dutchman’s ability to kickbox.
As an alternative, he competed against Mike Bernardo in a fight that was not part of a tournament at the K-1 Survival 2003 Japan Grand Prix Final, which took place on September 21, 2003, in Yokohama, Japan. During the first round, he was knocked down twice with low kicks, and then he was finished out with a high kick in the second round of the fight. Genki Sudo was Esch’s opponent in his debut mixed martial arts fight, which took place on December 31, 2003, at K-1 PREMIUM 2003 Dynamite!! in Nagoya, Japan. The fight was an openweight affair.
