Eric Church is a rebel, both by design and by situation; he is an old-fashioned outlaw in a period that is governed by sweet country-pop and smiling dudes singing about chicks, trucks, and beer. Eric Church is a rebel both by purpose and by circumstance. Church was burlier, brawnier, sharper, and smarter than the pack, consciously evoking the ghosts of Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash while also playing with metallic guitars, which had previously had no place in hardcore country music.
Church loved all of those things, along with a little smoke, but he was smarter than the pack. This is typical of the church’s tendency to muddy the lines. He sung about “Springsteen” in a sorrowful ballad that sounded a little like the Boss, he snuck reverse guitars onto “Creepin’,” and he sneaked some funk into “Cold One,” which made him a covert musical rebel to go along with his overt outlaw position. He was amply rewarded for his rule-breaking, earning considerable sales, especially after 2011’s breakthrough Chief, but also strong reviews from the mainstream rock music press.
This was merely another way in which he carried the torch from Willie, Waylon, and the rest of the artists who came before him. Church’s daring, complex albums Mr. Misunderstood, Desperate Man, and Heart & Soul helped him become a symbol for how experimental and unique mainstream country might be in the 21st century. This was the case regardless of how much attention he garnered from rock fans.
Granite Falls, North Carolina was Church’s childhood home, and she started her singing career there as a young kid. When he was 13 years old, he began creating songs and eventually taught himself how to play the guitar. During his time at Appalachian State University, he was a member of a band called the Mountain Boys, which was active in the western region of North Carolina. Following graduation from college with a degree in marketing, he relocated to Nashville with the intention of beginning a career in country music.
It took him a year to secure a song publishing agreement with Sony/ATV, but once he did, he began getting other musicians to record his songs. One example of this is Terri Clark’s cover of “The World Needs a Drink.” Church became acquainted with the record producer Jay Joyce, who became interested in him as a recording artist, and the two of them started creating demos together. Because of this, he was signed to a record deal with Capitol Records Nashville.
Church’s first song, “How ‘Bout You,” was published at the beginning of 2006, and by the time Capitol released his first album, Sinners Like Me, in July 2006, it had already broken into the Top 20 of the country music charts. The record was a commercial and critical success, and he followed it up with Carolina in 2009. Carolina went for the contemporary country fences and hit them, scoring two Top Ten singles on the country charts with “Love Your Love the Most” (which was certified gold) and “Hell on the Heart.” The record was a swing for the contemporary country fences and hit them.
In the year 2010, Church received another gold single for his performance of “Smoke a Little Smoke,” and he also earned the Academy of Country Music Award for Top New Solo Vocalist for that calendar year. Following a lengthy tour schedule, he released the Caldwell County EP in January 2011, which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard country chart and was accompanied by the song “Homeboy.” In July, he then spoke with the Chief of the LP.
The breakthrough album for Church was Chief, which was released in July 2011 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album list as well as the Top Country Albums chart. Shortly after that, Church achieved his first ever number one hit with “Drink in My Hand,” which quickly ascended to the top of the national charts.
It was overtaken in popularity during the summer of 2012 by the song “Springsteen,” which not only topped the country charts but also made it into the top 20 of the mainstream charts. The songs “Creepin'” and “Like Jesus Does” were taken from the album Chief, which went on to win Album of the Year at the 2012 Country Music Academy Awards. Chief was also responsible for earning him his first nominations for a Grammy Award, in the categories of Best Country Album, Best Country Song, and Best Solo Performance for “Springsteen.”
Caught in the Act is a live album that was published by Church at the beginning of 2013; it was recorded live at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in October 2012; the album made its debut at number five on the Billboard 200 chart. Church devoted the remaining months of 2013 to the creation of his fourth studio long-player.
The strong rock of “The Outsiders,” a single that would later turn out to be the album’s title tune, was the first taste of this body of material that was offered to the public. The Outsiders was released in February 2014 with much anticipation, and it quickly became his second album to reach number one on both the country and overall charts. It was preceded by the second single, “Give Me Back My Hometown,” which followed the title tune into the national Top Ten.
