Race car driver Jeff Gordon is a native of the United States. He was born on August 4, 1971, in Vallejo, California, and rose to prominence in the sport throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. It was largely due to his aggressive driving style and natural talent for publicity that stock-car racing became popular in the United States.
When Gordon was younger, he raced BMX bicycles, but later he was given a quarter-midget racing car to drive. At the age of eight, he took first place in the national quarter-midget competition, and he repeated that achievement two years later. Soon after, he graduated to go-karts with higher power, which allowed him to consistently compete and win against youngsters who were roughly twice his age. Gordon and his family relocated to Pittsboro, Indiana, when he was 13 years old so that he could compete in sprint car races with 650 horsepower vehicles in which there was no minimum age limit.
At the age of 18, Gordon made the decision to start stock-car racing, and over the course of the next two years, he attended a number of driving schools, one of which was directed by Buck Baker, a race-car driver who is a member of the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame. During this time, Gordon gained experience that proved to be invaluable.
Before signing with Rick Hendrick, owner of a Cup Series team, in 1992, Gordon raced in the Grand National Series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), which is a level below the competition in the Cup Series. Gordon was awarded the title of Rookie of the Year for the Cup circuit in 1993, which was his first full year of competing on the Cup circuit.
The next year, he took first place in the inaugural Brickyard 400, which was the first major stock-car race to be conducted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 1995, he won his first season points title, which was also his first overall victory. During the 1997 season, Gordon made history by being the youngest driver to win the sport’s most prestigious race, the Daytona 500.
He was also the first driver to win the Southern 500, NASCAR’s oldest race, three years in a row. He was able to win his second NASCAR title with the aid of these wins. In 1998, when Gordon was 27 years old, he broke the record for youngest driver to win three season point titles. This was on his way to equal Richard Petty’s record of 13 wins in a single season.
In 1999, he won the Daytona 500 for the second time, and in 2001, he won the points championship for the season for the fourth time, which at the time was the third-highest career total in NASCAR history, behind Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty. In 2004, Gordon won the Brickyard 400 for the fourth time. In 2005, he repeated his victory in the Daytona 500, despite the fact that he finished 11th in the point standings for NASCAR that season, which was his lowest final placement in 12 years.
In 2007, Gordon was able to go back to his old self, placing second in the standings for the Cup behind his teammate Jimmie Johnson. The fact that Gordon was a part owner of the vehicle that Johnson drove to five straight Cup wins helped to soften the blow of the close defeat (2006–10). Even though he did not win any races in the Cup Series in either 2008 or 2010, he still managed to accumulate enough points to place in the top 10 of the standings at the end of either season.
This was the first time in 15 years that he did not win a race in the Cup Series. Gordon continued to finish among the top 10 drivers in each of the next four seasons, and in 2013, he established a NASCAR record by capturing at least one pole position in a race for the 21st consecutive season. He also continued to rank among the top 10 drivers in each of the following four seasons. Gordon only won one race in 2015, but he still managed to come in third place in the overall drivers’ standings; at the conclusion of the season, he announced his retirement from NASCAR.
Stock car racing is a sort of auto racing that is very popular in the United States. In this style of racing, vehicles that correspond outwardly to conventional U.S. commercial types are competed against one another on racetracks that are typically oval and asphalt. During the time of Prohibition in the United States (1919–1933), when illegal still operators needed private cars capable of more than ordinary speed to evade the law while transporting liquor, they tuned and altered ordinary passenger automobiles to make them faster. It is believed that this is where stock-car racing got its start. After that, these automobiles were used for recreational racing, notably in the southern states, which were the places in which the sport maintained its highest level of popularity.
In 1939, Langhorne, Pennsylvania was the site of the first organized stock-car racing event. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), which was established in 1947 at Daytona Beach, Florida, was the first organized organization to be associated with the sport of stock car auto racing. Beginning in the 1930s, the activity quickly gained popularity on the sands of Daytona Beach, but it wasn’t until 1948 that the city hosted its first officially sanctioned race.
In the 1970s, besides the United States Auto Club (USAC), a number of other organizations also sponsored stock-car racing events. Automobile manufacturers will often provide financial support to racing teams in order to evaluate the effectiveness of their performance and safety equipment. See the table below for a complete list of NASCAR victories.
