When Matthew Pepe’s daughter was about 2 years old back in 2015, he saw that she was watching a lot of the same YouTube stuff that his son, who was 5 at the time, had been watching when he was her age and was now watching with her.
It sparked my interest, Pepe remarked. “Back then, there were only straightforward toy-play videos, but if you look at the statistics, you’ll see that they had millions or tens of millions of views. It motivated me to pursue something that my children would love as a father. I was able to produce items that I knew people would enjoy. He created a notion with his longtime buddy Chris Clarke that would put Ellie Clarke, who had come to the U.S. from China via Japan, front and center. Pepe continues, “After Chris, Ellie, and I did some research and preparation, we thought let’s try this, let’s start making our own films for YouTube with Ellie as the emphasis. “We believed a female Asian lead would be exciting and unique. Pepe and Clarke, who come from the construction and corporate finance professions, respectively, had no prior expertise in production prior to co-creating The Ellie Sparkles Show. We lacked experience, Clarke admits. “We developed the idea by starting with straightforward toy-play and unboxing films where you can only see your hands. Ellie rose to prominence as the face of the network, providing the voice, hands, and personality that served as the model for the Ellie Sparkles persona.
WildBrain Spark sent Pepe and Clarke an email in 2017. The moment Pepe saw the name, he thought, “Wow, this is one of the largest premium kids’ and family AVOD networks in the world, and they’re contacting us. “We replied to that email quite fast, and it turned out to be an interesting partnership for the channel. It transformed what Chris claimed to be Ellie Sparkles’ voice and hands into a live-action character [and] a children’s brand. In essence, that’s what we’ve been concentrating on with WildBrain Spark, making the best live-action video content for kids on YouTube.
The Ellie Sparkles Show encourages kindness, understanding, and sharing. With the use of short stories and on-camera adventures, Ellie engages children in the videos, inspiring them to take on new challenges and learn new skills. Promoting inclusivity and making sure Ellie serves as a positive role model for the viewers are two of the developers of the show’s primary objectives.
Ellie should be a kind figure, adds Clarke. “We are very conscious of advancing the idea of inclusiveness from the production stage all the way to post. We also came to the conclusion that Ellie Sparkles, an Asian American, is a distinctive and underutilized character in children’s media. She’s becoming more and more of a strong-willed, unrestrained type of character.
So, why can’t any little child watching be what they want to be if Ellie Sparkles can become a YouTube celebrity? Sara Rahman, who studied acting at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, plays the title character Ellie in the live-action series. We had high expectations for her acting prowess, but Pepe also notes that she immediately connected with the part. “She embodied the optimistic side of Ellie Sparkles. She’s also done a fantastic job of growing the character in line with our own growth as authors, directors, and producers. She also takes satisfaction in being one of the few Asian American female leads in children’s entertainment and in having the chance to influence young people’s lives as Ellie Sparkles.
Even before the casting process started, we all stressed the importance of Ellie Sparkles being a diverse character, Clarke continues. The fact that the first Ellie was diverse herself contributed to some of that. We wanted kids all around the world to be able to look at Ellie and feel a connection to her because we were aware of our global reach. Sadly, not many Asian American youngsters could declare that they had many fictional characters that resembled them in terms of appearance and attitude merely in America. We were definitely hoping to get that along.
