Edward John Eddie Izzard is a stand-up comedian and actor from the United Kingdom. He was birth on February 7, 1962. Her comedic performance is characterized by meandering, quirky monologues and pantomimes referencing herself.
Unrepeatable, Definite Article, Glorious, Dress to Kill, Circle, Sexie, and Stripped are some of the stand-up sets that Izzard has contributed to. She played the lead character of Wayne Malloy in the television series The Riches, and she has acted in several films, including Ocean’s Twelve, Ocean’s Thirteen, Mystery Men, The Cat’s Meow, Across the Universe, and Valkyrie. Her most recent film appearance is in Across the Universe.
She has said that Monty Python is her primary source of comedic inspiration, and John Cleese has referred to her as the “Lost Python” in the past. Even though she had never run large distances before, she finished 43 marathons in only 51 days for Sport Relief in 2009.
Izzard was the youngest of the four children that John and Ella Izzard had when he was born in Aden, Yemen. The Izzard family relocated to Northern Ireland in 1963, only a few short years before the British pulled out of the capital of Aden.
Izzard stayed in Bangor, County Down, until 1967, when problems began. The family then relocated to Skewen, Wales, and Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, England. Izzard continued to live in Bangor, County Down. Izzard’s mother passed away in March of 1968 from cancer-related complications. Izzard has said that they realized they were a transgender person when they were four years old, after viewing a video of a boy being forced to wear a dress by his sisters, and that they knew they wanted to be an actor when they were seven years old.
Izzard and his student companion, Rob Ballard, first experimented with comedy while enrolled at the University of Sheffield. Following their departure from the accounting industry, Izzard and Ballard put their act on the road, performing often in Covent Garden. After his relationship with Ballard ended, Izzard spent a significant portion of the early 1980s traveling across Europe and the United States. A seat performer claims that they honed their humorous voice by conversing with the audience during solo escape performances, contributing to developing their comedic voice. Izzard then took their act to several stand-up comedy clubs around Britain, with their debut performance taking place at the Banana Cabaret in Balham, located in London.
Izzard made their first performance on stage for the first time in 1987 at the Comedy Store in London. Throughout the 1980s, Izzard worked to perfect their comedic material. In the early 1990s, they started to get a reputation for their improvisational comedy, which they performed in part at their club, “Raging Bull,” in Soho.
After delivering their “Raised by Wolves” routine on the televised “Hysteria 3” AIDS fundraiser in 1991, Izzard got their big break. Izzard’s performance as a stand-up comedian earned them two British Comedy Awards: one in 1993 for Live at the Ambassadors and another in 1996 for Definitive Article.
Following the conclusion of the show’s run in the UK, Izzard brought “Definite Article” to major cities outside the UK, including a very well-received run in New York City. However, their breakthrough in the United States did not occur until 1998, when ‘Dress to Kill’ was shown on the American television channel HBO. This performance went on to win Izzard two Emmy Awards in the year 2000.
Izzard has appeared in several movies, the first of which was 1996’s The Secret Agent. He has also played real-life people like Charlie Chaplin in The Cat’s Meow, actor Gustav von Wangenheim in Shadow of the Vampire, and General Erich Fellgiebel in Valkyrie. His film credits begin with 1996’s The Secret Agent. Other parts he has played include Lussurioso in Revengers Tragedy, Mr. Kite in Across the Universe, and criminal expert Roman Nagel in Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen.
Izzard has provided his voice for various characters, including “It” from the movie Five Children and It, Nigel from The Wild, and Reepicheep, a mouse warrior from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Izzard was one of the actors who starred in the 2009 BBC science fiction miniseries The Day of the Triffids, adapted from the book written in 1951. Other cast members were Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, and Dougray Scott.
Izzard gave the medals to the participants who had won the 800m T54 event at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Among the recipients of awards was David Weir, who won the gold medal. In the Showtime series United States of Tara, Izzard portrayed the role of Dr. Hatteras, a skeptical psychology professor.
He also had a guest appearance as Dr. Abel Gideon in six episodes of the American psychological horror television series Hannibal during the 2013–2015 television season. Izzard portrayed Robert Watson-Watt, the man who devised aircraft-detecting radar technology in time for the Battle of Britain, in the BBC drama film Castles in the Sky, which was released in 2014. Izzard performed the role in 2014.
Izzard appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week program in June 2017, when they read passages from their book Believe Me. Izzard was a guest on The Daily Show in May 2019, when they addressed their present endeavors as a comedian, their plans in the political sphere, and their continuous efforts as dedicated marathon runners.
