Born in Australia on December 4, 1990, Dylan Martin Alcott, AO is a former wheelchair tennis player, former wheelchair basketball player, radio personality, and motivational speaker. He has also played basketball and tennis in wheelchairs. The Australian men’s national wheelchair basketball team, sometimes referred to as the “Rollers” in the local lingo, had Alcott as a member. At the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, he accomplished the feat of becoming the youngest person to ever win a gold medal in the Rollers category. Additionally, he was the youngest person to ever participate in the wheelchair basketball tournament.
It was in 2014 that he made his comeback to wheelchair tennis to compete in the Rio Paralympics in 2016. He was successful in both the Men’s Quad Singles and Doubles competitions, winning gold medals in all of them. His remarkable performance at the Rio Olympics earned him the title of Australian Paralympian of the Year for 2016. Only Alcott has ever won all four major singles tournaments and the Paralympics in 2021, making him the only guy to ever accomplish the Golden Slam in quad singles.
In addition to that, he was victorious in the quad singles, a non-calendar-year Grand Slam, between the years 2018 and 2019. Also, he is the first person to ever win all four major championships in 2019, making him the only person to ever complete the Grand Slam in quad doubles. In addition to his work as a sportsman, Alcott was a commentator for the 2019 Australian Open and presented the weekend afternoon radio program on Triple J, an Australian radio station. He also broadcast the live music event The Set on ABC.
He was also a part of the panel of the Australian Football League Footy Show in 2019, up until the show was canceled. Both the title of Australian of the Year and the honor of Officer of the Order of Australia were bestowed to Alcott in the year 2022. In the 2022 Archibald Prize competition, a portrait by Felix von Dallwitz titled Dylan Alcott, AOTY was one of the finalists. When Alcott was 14 years old, he participated in his first game of wheelchair basketball.
During the 2006 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship, Alcott made his debut with the Rollers, the men’s national wheelchair basketball team of Australia. The Rollers went on to win the bronze medal in the tournament. When the Rollers traveled to Beijing for the Olympic warm-up competition in January 2008, Alcott remained to maintain his position as a member of the team and even participated in the tournament.
Alcott became well-known in the sport of basketball as a result of his accomplishments in the national league competition. He was a member of the Dandenong Rangers (which is not to be confused with the female club of the same name), and he was picked for the all-star squad in the year 2008. He was very successful in junior competition, earning the title of Most Valuable Player in the Junior National Basketball Championships. He has also had success in senior play.
In 2009, Alcott earned a scholarship to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. While there, he was a member of the University of Illinois wheelchair basketball team, which went on to win the College Championship division. Following a year of education, he decided to go back to Melbourne to begin his preparations for the Paralympic Games in London in 2012.
On the occasion of the Wheelchair Basketball World Championship, which took place in Birmingham, England in 2010, Alcott was a member of the Rollers team that achieved triumph. A member of the global All-Star 5 for the event, Alcott was a member of the Australian wheelchair basketball team that won the global title for the very first time.
Alcott made his comeback to wheelchair tennis in the year 2014. His ranking was among the top five juniors in the world while he was just 16 years old. In the final of the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship, which took place in Nottingham in July 2014, he won his first Super Series title by defeating Andy Lapthorne by a score of 7–5, 6–1. At the beginning of the year, he came out on top at the New Zealand Open, which was just his second event competition.
In January 2015, he triumphed against David Wagner in straight sets to gain the title of champion of the quad wheelchair competition at the Australian Open. The grand slam championship was his first-ever victory. After winning eight championships, including two grand slam singles titles, he arrived at the top of the rankings at the end of the year 2015. Alcott became the third professional tennis player and the only male player to win the calendar-year Golden Slam in 2021. He did it by winning singles championships at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. Additionally, he won the singles gold medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
In 2021, he accomplished the feat with Diede de Groot, another professional wheelchair tennis player who had already accomplished it. They achieved this accomplishment, becoming the first two professional tennis players to do it since Steffi Graf in 1988. After Alcott won the gold medal at the Paralympics, he announced that he would not be competing in the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. The announcement marked his retirement from the sport. In November 2021, Alcott made public his plan to completely retire from the professional tennis circuit after the conclusion of the Australian Open in January 2022.
