Timothy David Paine is a former Australian cricketer who was born on December 8, 1984. He was also a former captain of the Australia national cricket team when they competed in Test matches. Not only is he a wicket-keeper and a right-handed batter, but he also plays for the Tasmanian Tigers in Australian domestic cricket. Before his selection for Australia in the 2017–18 Ashes series, he was the captain of the Hobart Hurricanes.
Throughout his career with Australia, Paine was able to secure the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009. Paine, who was a product of the Australian Cricket Academy, became the youngest player to ever be signed to a contract in Australia when he was just 16 years old and granted a rookie deal with Tasmania. In 2005, he made his debut for Tasmania in both the first-class and one-day formats. He went on to score a century in the one-day format later in the 2005–06 season, and he then went on to score a double century, 215, in his subsequent innings.
He was a member of the state’s one-day winning team in 2007–2008 and also played a role in the state’s first-ever Sheffield Shield triumph during that season. As a substitute for Brad Haddin, who was Australia’s regular wicket-keeper, Paine made his first appearance for Australia in a One-Day International match against Scotland in 2009. In 2010, Haddin had a second injury, which provided the opportunity for Paine to make his debut in a test match against Pakistan in England.
Almost immediately after that, he participated in two more tests against India, which took place before Haddin’s return for the Ashes series in 2010–2011. Beginning in April 2011, he was not a regular member of the Australian cricket team. This continued until his comeback for the 2017-2018 Ashes series when both Peter Nevill and Matthew Wade failed to impress selectors. During this time, he also had injuries that caused him to miss nearly two complete seasons of the season.
Even though Paine was not a regular member of Tasmania’s state team and coach Adam Griffith had to persuade him not to retire before the season, this was a big return for Paine. In March 2018, former Australian captain Steve Smith acknowledged being involved in a ball-tampering incident that occurred during the Third Test match against South Africa.
During the middle of the match, Smith and David Warner, who was serving as vice-captain, were removed from their leadership roles. For the next two days of the game, Paine was named the temporary captain, according to the announcement. On March 28, 2018, Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Australia James Sutherland announced that he would be the 46th captain of the Australian Test squad. This announcement came at the same time when Smith and Warner were banned and sent back to Australia along with Cameron Bancroft.
In an incident that occurred off the field in 2017, Paine sent explicit texts to a female co-worker, which led to his resigning from his position as Australia’s Test captain. Paine announced on November 19, 2021, that he had resigned from his position. Paine announced that he will be taking a vacation from the game “for the foreseeable future” on November 26, 2021. Paine was a part of Tasmania’s Under-19 squad when he was only fifteen years old. He also led Tasmania in the Under-15 and Under-17 levels of international competition.
Before achieving a first-class century for his University at Hobart, he served as the vice-captain of the Australian Under-17 team. “He was always the smallest one playing cricket,” recalled John, his father. “He was always the youngest.” The fact that we lived in a relatively peaceful neighborhood and that we were located right next to the beach in the suburb of Lauderdale meant that they used to play a significant amount of beach cricket.
In the past, we had a cricket field in our backyard, which was the driveway. The neighbors next door had a turf wicket, and the boys used to roll it, mow it, and do all kinds of other things with it. As a result, I believe he had to start learning at a young age how to become a little bit more powerful and a little bit more competitive. Paine was a superb Australian rules player when he was a youngster, and he was regarded to be good enough to make it straight into the Australian Football League.
Robert Shaw, Paine’s uncle, was a player and coach in the Australian Football League. During his secondary education, he received his education at Bayview Secondary College and Rosny College. The fact that Paine obtained a basic rookie contract with Tasmania, which was a novelty in Australian cricket, made him the youngest player ever to be contracted in Australian domestic cricket. Paine was just 16 years old at the time.
Following Cricket Australia’s decision to enable rookie contracts, Paine expressed his gratitude by saying, “These new contracts are a great idea; I’m pretty happy about them anyway!” To demonstrate to young players that they are in the thoughts of the administration and coaches, it is beneficial to provide them with something to indicate that they are being considered. Throughout an ING Cup one-day encounter against Western Australia in Perth in November 2005, Paine made his debut for Tasmania as a solitary opening batsman. He scored 28 runs off of 44 balls throughout the match.
Shortly after that, he made his debut in the first-class competition as an opener between Tasmania and South Australia at Hobart in December. When Paine took the batting position, he scored a duck (zero) in the first inning and 17 runs in the second inning, which resulted in a tie for the match. In the first season of his career, he scored 111 runs in the ING Cup, which was his first century on the List A.His first-ever first-class century came the next year when he scored 215 against Western Australia in a Pura Cup match that took place in Perth in October of 2006.
