DJ Snake was born on June 13, 1986. After deciding at age 15 that the suburb he grew up in was no better than a slum, Snake moved to Paris to work at a popular record store. DJ Snake met several famous musicians in the hip-hop, rap, and electronic dance music scenes while working at a record store. He developed close relationships with artists like DJ Cut Killer, Cypress Hill, and KRS-One, all of whom would become influential influences on his career. A former interviewee of DJ Snake’s recalled that the sight of DJ Cut Killer composing music for the cult French film “La Haine” was the deciding factor in DJ Snake’s career choice.
Early in his career, Snake performed as a DJ at many Paris nightclubs and bars, including the famous “Les Baines Douches” and “VIP ROOM.” He started out playing at house parties and impromptu events before getting on to the big time in Parisian nightclubs. Back in 2005, when deejaying was in its infancy and open format reigned supreme, DJ Snake met Steve Goncalves, his future manager, at one of the clubs.
After three years, Steve finally convinced Snake to join forces with him and encourage him to compose music on his own.DJ Snake, whose real name is William Sami Etienne Grigahcine, is a French rapper and deejay who shot to popularity after receiving two Grammy Award nominations for his original compositions and productions. For her Grammy-nominated debut album, “Born This Way,” DJ Snake collaborated with Lady Gaga on composition, recording, and release. Later, he collaborated with fellow American rapper and record producer Lil Jon on the Grammy-nominated music video “Turn Down for What.” DJ Snake, who cites Cypress Hill and KRS-One as early inspirations, was a huge fan of graffiti as a kid. The Parisian gendarmes who pursued him because of his graffiti on city walls were rarely successful in capturing him.
His skill to avoid harm while in combat gave him the nickname “Snake.” When he started deejaying later on, he was given the moniker “DJ Snake,” and it stuck. When he was a young man, he began his career as a DJ at Paris’s discos and nightclubs. A few more years of collaborating with artists like Lady Gaga, Diplo, and Lil John resulted in him being a household name throughout the world. DJ Snake has been nominated for multiple Grammys, Billboard Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of the “Trap,” “House,” and “Electronic Dance Music” subgenres of music.
When DJ Snake met Paul Blair, Lady Gaga’s tour DJ, he was given his first major break. Blair chose five of the twenty new tracks that Snake had written for him to incorporate into the song “Government Hooker” by Lady Gaga from her album “Born This Way.” Although it did not win, ‘Born This Way’ received a 2012 Grammy nomination thanks in part to DJ Snake’s production work. He collaborated on the production of “Government Hooker,” which many Lady Gaga fans have since deemed the album’s standout cut.
Do What U Want, Sexxxx Dreams, and Applause from Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP were all co-produced by him and Paul Blair. The single “Turn Down for What,” which featured DJ Snake and Lil Jon, was released by Columbia Records in December 2013. In the same month and year, the song also reached the top 10 on Billboard’s chart for electronic dance music.
Turn Down for What debuted at #38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and rose to #5 on the Electronic Dance Music chart in January 2014. In February and March of 2014, respectively, this song was certified gold and platinum. In 2014, ‘Turn Down for What’ was nominated for multiple MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Direction. Best Direction at the MTV Video Music Awards went to the winning tune.
In 2014, Snake and Dillon Francis collaborated to release “Get Low,” the lead single off Francis’s debut studio album “Money Sucks, Friends Rule,” on their respective YouTube and SoundCloud channels. Skrillex’s first concert tour, aptly titled “Mothership Tour,” took place in 2014. Guest DJs Snake and Dillon Francis took turns performing as opening acts. In 2015, he performed at the Coachella Music Festival, where Aluna George, Major Lazer, and M also appeared.
The song “You Know You Like It,” originally performed by Aluna George, was remixed by a DJ and was one of the top 10 Shazamed songs (list) chosen from Coachella 2015.DJ Snake and fellow electronic dance musician/producer Tchami were seriously injured in a car accident in 2015, preventing them from performing at Toronto’s Monster Mash Festival.
The 2015 film ‘Furious 7’, the seventh in the ‘Fast and Furious franchise, included the hit tracks ‘Get Low’ and ‘Turn Down for What’ on its original soundtrack. In 2014, DJ Snake’s ‘You Know You Enjoy It’ remix was released on Island Records and promoted worldwide. In 2015, the remixed version of the song climbed to the top of the Billboard Dance Mix/Show Airplay list and the Rhythmic Songs chart, respectively. In that same year, the remix peaked at number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100.
