Dita Von Teese Bio

Dita Von Teese was born in Rochester, Michigan, and raised there. “It’s like a different cosmos from the colored klieg lights of Hollywood and Paris,” she said of her homeland in a recent interview. The old movies with the most magnificent creatures — Betty Grable, Mae West, Carmen Miranda, Marlene Dietrich — were our muses, and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, my mother and I had a front-row seat on a rocket ship to those exotic places.”

Her father worked as a machinist, while her mother worked as a manicurist at the family business. She is descended from families of English, Scottish, Armenian, and German ancestry. Von Teese has revealed that one of her grandparents was half-Armenian and was adopted into an Anglo-Saxon American family by her maternal grandfather. Dietrich von Teese is well-known for her affinity with 1940s cinema and beautiful vintage fashion.

When she was younger, her mother encouraged her to dress up in different outfits by purchasing clothes for her daughter to wear. Her mother was a fan of old, Golden Age-period Hollywood films, and it was through her that Von Teese developed an interest in the actresses of the era, particularly Betty Grable. Von Teese was born into a family of film fans. She began classical ballet training at a young age and made her professional debut as a soloist for a local ballet company at the age of thirteen.

Von Teese admits that she originally intended to be a ballerina, but that at the age of 15, she was “as excellent as I was ever going to be.” She would eventually include this element into her burlesque performances, in which she frequently performs en pointe, as well. When her father’s job brought the family from Michigan to Orange County, California, she was eight years old. Von Teese attended University High School in Irvine, California, where he received his education.

The first bra that Von Teese ever owned was made of simple white cotton, and she received a plastic egg holding a pair of wrinkly, flesh-colored pantyhose from her mother when she was a teenager. Her disappointment was expressed by Von Teese, who had hoped to receive exquisite lacy clothes and stockings, similar to those she had seen in her father’s Playboy magazines, but did not receive any.

This spurred her desire to pursue a career in lingerie. When she was 15, she began working as a salesgirl in a lingerie boutique, eventually rising to the position of the buyer. For as long as she can remember, Von Teese has liked to dress in intricate lingerie, such as corsets and basques, with completely fashioned stockings. Von Teese majored in historic costuming in college and planned to work as a film stylist after graduation. She has formal training as a costume designer, and she frequently designs (and obtains copyright for) her own picture sessions.

Von Teese got her iconic beauty mark tattooed on her left cheek when she was 18 years old. In her first book, she describes how she went to a strip club for the first time when she was 19 years old and how she was quickly brought on to work alongside her job at a beauty counter. She was taken aback by the lack of uniqueness displayed by the other strippers and desired to combine vintage and fetish style into her performance.

When Von Teese chose her stage name, she chose Dita as a tribute to the actress Dita Parlo, who starred in silent films during the 1920s. She had to choose a surname for her first major magazine cover, which she did by looking through the phone book for Von Treese, which was available at the time. Playboy misread her name as Von Teese, which she eventually adopted as her own.

Von Teese is well-known for her painted eye, highly penciled brow, a swipe of crimson lipstick, and blue-black hairstyle that she has perfected over the years. “I have my distinctive look, and I’m sticking to it because it’s the look that is one hundred percent me, and it was all designed by me,” she explains. It’s possible that I’m a one-trick pony for it. However, that is a very clever trick! Dietrich von Teese is best known for her burlesque performances, for which she has been nicknamed the “Queen of Burlesque” by the media.

Von Teese began performing burlesque in 1992 and, as a proponent of Neo-Burlesque, she has contributed to the popularisation of the genre’s resurgence in recent years. “I put the tease back into striptease,” as she puts it, with long, intricate dance shows that include props and characters that are generally influenced by 1930s and 1940s musicals and films. Some of her most well-known dances have included a carousel horse, a gigantic powder compact, a filigree heart, and a clawfoot bathtub with a functional showerhead, among other things.

Her feather fan dance, which was inspired by burlesque dancer Sally Rand, featured the largest feather fans in the world, which are now on exhibit at the Museum of Sex in Hollywood. Besides adult films, Von Teese has also appeared in mainstream films. Her early films included fetish-related softcore pornographic films such as Romancing Sara and Matter of Trust (in which she is credited under her real name of Heather Sweet), as well as two hardcore fetish films directed by Andrew Blake, Pin-Ups 2 and Decadence.

Since then, she has appeared in more mainstream films, such as the 2005 short film The Death of Salvador Dali, written by Delaney Bishop, which won awards for best screenplay and Best Cinematography at SXSW and Raindance film festivals, as well as Best Actress at the Beverly Hills Film Festival. She has also appeared in a number of documentaries, including The Death of Salvador Dali, which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2005. In 2007, she starred in the feature film Saint Francis, in which she received critical acclaim.

As a part of George Michael’s live tour in 2008, she performed in a striptease/burlesque act in support of the song “Feelin’ Good.” In addition to this, she made an appearance at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 as the focal point of Germany’s song, Miss Kiss Kiss Bang by Alex Swings, Oscar Sings, which won the competition. During the same year, she participated in the music video for Thirty Seconds to Mars’ song “Up in the Air.”

During a 2007 interview, she commented, “I don’t understand why women feel the urge to enter the acting industry as soon as they become renowned… But I think if the part was aesthetically pleasing, I might be willing to consider it.” In the episode “A Kiss Before Frying,” which aired in January 2011, Von Teese appeared as a guest star on the CBS police procedural drama series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, in which her friend Eric Szmanda also appeared, as herself.

In a film noir-inspired scenario, she plays Rita von Squeeze, a femme fatale version of herself who seduces Szmanda’s character, Greg Sanders, in a role inspired by herself. Von Teese made an appearance as Beetroot on the Fox television series The Masked Dancer, which aired in the United Kingdom in 2021. She became the third celebrity to be revealed on May 31, 2021, when she was unmasked.

When the eleventh season of Danse Avec Les stars, the French version of Dancing with the Stars, premieres in September 2021, Von Teese will be competing as a competitor. Several best-dressed lists have included Von Teese, and she frequently appears on the front row of fashion events, particularly those by Christian Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Marc Jacobs, all of whose labels she is regularly seen sporting.

Von Teese has spoken about her admiration for Jean Paul Gaultier, stating, “Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, and Vivienne Westwood were the first designers who really made an impact on me.” Several of Jean Paul’s passions overlap with mine, such as corsetry, ballet-peach satin and silks, black silk velvet, bullet bras, and girdles.

My teenage years were spent searching for 1930s peach satin lingerie pieces in an attempt to achieve his look for a fraction of the price because I couldn’t buy his clothes at the time. It was a dream come true to meet him and become friends with him, and I am grateful for the opportunity. It was a dream come true for me to meet him for the first time when I was doing my first fashion photo shoot for Flaunt magazine, which was a massive feature about me wearing the most essential pieces from his haute couture archives.

She has also walked the catwalk on several occasions. During the spring 2004 edition of Los Angeles Fashion Week, she walked the runway for former club child Richie Rich’s fashion business, Heatherette. In 2005, she walked in the Autumn/Winter Ready-to-Wear show for Giambattista Valli, a former Ungaro designer who was now working as a fashion consultant.

As part of Milan Fashion Week 2006, Von Teese walked the runway for the Moschino Cheap & Chic Autumn/Winter 2006/7 event, which was the opening show for the Moschino diffusion line, Moschino Cheap & Chic. She made two appearances in the Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture show during Paris Fashion Week in 2007, and she made another appearance in the event in 2014.

She has been in a number of advertising campaigns. A few years later, she appeared in the spring/summer 2005 collection advertisements for Vivienne Westwood and was chosen to be the face of the Australian apparel line “Wheels and Dollbaby” for their 2006/7 Spring/Summer advertising campaign. MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam VI campaign (a collection of lipsticks and lipglosses from which 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to AIDS charities around the world and to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS) featured her as an ambassador/spokesmodel for HIV/AIDS awareness.

She was one of four women chosen (along with Eve, Debbie Harry, and Lisa Marie Presley) to be part of the campaign. Von Teese has appeared in numerous fashion magazines, including Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle, and worldwide issues of practically every fashion publication. Von Teese has stated that she does not employ the services of a stylist. A pair of my 1940s shoes were selected by one of my stylists, who commented, ‘These would look extremely nice with jeans’, on the occasion that I hired one.

“I told you right away that you were out of here.” She does her own make-up and dyes her naturally blonde hair black at home, which she does on her own time. Von Teese’s distinctive style is “inspired by quirky women such as Luisa Casati, Anna Piaggi, and Isabella Blow,” according to the actress. Furthermore, she claims that “doing it yourself is a question of honesty and pride.” I’m looking forward to the day when I can look the world in the eyes and say, “Yes, I did it.”

I enjoy the boost in self-esteem it provides. I’d feel like a phony if I didn’t do it. The truth is that doing it myself takes less time [than having a stylist do it]. It’s also a whole lot more enjoyable! “Why would I deprive myself of such unadulterated pleasure?” She has collaborated with Wonderbra to create a new underwear collection. In addition to the garter belt, which has six garters instead of the typical four, two each at the front, side seams, and back, Von Teese is known for her lace gowns, which are adorned with garters. In collaboration with the German cosmetics firm Art Deco.
