Meyer was born in Queens, New York, to a Jewish family; her paternal grandparents were from Austria and Germany, and her maternal grandparents were from Germany. Meyer then recalled her audition, during which she asked Verhoeven if it was okay if she read for Dizzy instead of the character she was auditioning for.
Since he didn’t appear to mind, she proceeded to act out the sequence, making sure to convey enough of the macho attitude that would come to characterize the role in the final picture. She had little trouble getting down to the nitty-gritty of the situation. I just evaded Paul [Verhoeven] and kind of tackled him in the room,” she recalled after the filming ended. “Yeah, you know what? I’ll tell you what,’ he remarked at that point. ‘She’s our Diz,’ we say.”
Considering this was only Meyer’s third film role (he previously appeared in Johnny Mnemonic and Dragonheart), his performance is all the more stunning. It appears that she was confident in her own abilities and was willing to take a risk in order to reject what the director was presumably anticipating. She’ll always be known as Dizzy Flores to the multitudes of sci-fi lovers who adore her. Starship Troopers, a sci-fi military epic directed by Paul Verhoeven and based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Heinlein, is a singularly bizarre film with the kind of well-developed, futuristic civilization that one might expect from the filmmaker of RoboCop. It follows Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) through his choice to enlist in the “Mobile Infantry,” a highly trained and heavily equipped organization on the front lines of an intergalactic war against “Bugs,” an alien species that may or may not be set on conquering the Earth.
Johnny joins the military with his love Carmen (Denise Richards) and closest buddy Carl (Neil Patrick Harris). He is also accompanied by Isabelle “Dizzy” Flores (Dina Meyer), whose unrequited feelings for Johnny further complicate matters.
From its attractive young cast to its intensely violent battle scenes to the frequent use of military recruitment commercials (always punctuated with “Would you like to know more?”) that serve to illustrate what appears to be the rather extreme ideology of this future world in which military service is all but mandatory, this film is memorable for about a hundred different reasons.
Another common refrain of the commercials — “Service secures citizenship” — implies strongly that veterans are not only accorded preferential treatment in modern society but are also the only ones who enjoy the kinds of rights that we take for granted.
The ramifications of this are nicely set out in one of the film’s most visually arresting scenes, though you could have missed it at first glance. Early in the film, a male Mobile Infantry recruit dubbed “Kitty,” who has ambitions to become a writer, engages in a lighthearted interrogation of his fellow recruits, including an uncooperative Rico, about their motives for participating in the military. Even if their responses are highly revealing, their attention may have been drawn elsewhere by the fact that the situation is also revealing in another, more literal sense.
